Comparing Canned Meat: Pork, Ham and Chicken

Don't know your chopped ham from your corned beef? Worried about stocking up on long life meat, only to find you hate the taste of a bacon grill?

Well put those concerns at rest, as our Phil takes a look at some store-bought products that will last for years and years! Whether it's a can of Spam or a reconstituted amalgamation of 'chicken breast', it's tasted cold, hot, and even given an approximation of how much fat it contains!

I suppose you could say "tulips from AmsterHam." Okay, I'll get my coat.

It is important to have a good percentage of fat; 50%+. Also, if surviving on canned meats it's important to have a good source of vitamin c to prevent scurvy. Sauerkraut, which is fermented salted cabbage, is a very good source and goes well with meat. Aldi sells German sauerkraut in glass jars (ingredients: cabbage, salt)

I would imagine a lot of companies do a lot to get the fat OUT of the product before going into the can. Fat will turn rancid faster than anything else, shortening the shelf life. Salt, Sodium, and nitrates has to be one of the primary ingredients as a 'flavor enhancer' and preservative. Good thing about so much slat is that in a survival situation, where you are eating a lot of unprocessed foods, the salt actually becomes necessary. You cannot live without salt. Add this meat to fresh vegetables and roots, and it will flavor them as well as add salt to the meal. They do have a lot though.

To add to the comparison... texture wise, I find the meats made from 'mechanically separated beef pork and chicken have a rubbery texture almost as if it were dispensed as an emulsion into the can. Not my favorite. SPAM, and others made from meat pieces forced into shaped under vacuum have a much better texture, but tend to be more salty in flavor.

Examples:
SPAM is made from real meat pieces.
TREET is made from mechanically separated meat. This product is generally cheaper.
Walmart has a Luncheon meat product under the Great Value name, and I find it superior to SPAM or TREET, and it is the lowest price.

Second one I've listened to, the first being corned beef. This is pretty useless information. I've got 200-plus cans of meat; I ate the corned beef most days of the week. So if I get hungry, I'll eat it.

I question the judgment of any person who says that SPAM tastes fine.
