That play. The play. How to describe it?
How about this…“the most amazing, sensational, dramatic... exciting, thrilling finish in the history of college football!” Those were the exact words used by game announcer Joe Starkey on the day it happened, Nov. 20, 1982. Four decades later, Starkey’s description of the last-second miracle play that included five laterals, a cannon, a trombone, and the bitter rivalry between the Cal Bears and Stanford Cardinals, that description still holds.
In this new episode of E60, host Jeremy Schaap marks the 40th anniversary of the most memorable play in college sports by taking viewers on a journey that blends laughter and life lessons. There are behind-the-scenes stories of the day, tales of how those few seconds on a football field changed lives, and insights into why the play still resonates today. Schaap traveled the country to speak with more than forty people intimately involved with the moment including players, coaches, band members, announcers, mascots, officials, and former students. What emerges makes clear that the 20 seconds it took for the play to unfold, for six words - “the band is on the field” - to become part of the sports lexicon, and for one remarkable play to be etched into our national memory, all of it represents much more than just a fantastic football finish. That play is about who we are and who we want to be.

I was in the end zone stands as a teenager for the Michigan/Colorado Kordell Stewart Hail Mary play that is quickly shown in the preview here...as a Michigan fan, I was devastated, but I knew I just seen something up close and live/in-person that would live on forever. (Funny, when the game appeared to be over at around the five-minute minute mark and fans started heading for the exits, I started making "I just seen the ghost of Doug Flutie, so don't leave now" jokes...I didn't know I'd be spot-on!)

He actually says, "The band is OUT on the field".

Kinda lost in the mix is the 1974 Ohio State v Michigan State game -- "One referee signaled touchdown. Two others said time had expired." And it would take 46 minutes to determine the final what may have been the first college football game decided by replay footage.

Great documentary. But why mis-title it? Starkey said "The band is OUT on the field"
