As a person with autism myself, as well as epilepsy, the bright colors and loud music were too much. Many on the autistic spectrum have something called Sensory Processing Disorder. This makes everyday stimuli overwhelming.

Also the fact that Sia handled things horribly online didn’t help either... it just made her seem closed minded and immature. All people were doing was pointing out the flaws and issues the film had. And all she did was get pissed at everyone who dared to criticize it.

To be honest, I’m not even angry over the fact that Maddie got casted. That’s quite common. But it would’ve been nice to have an actual autistic person act there part. That way, they’d have some experience on what having autism is really like. However, I am angry that I have to keep repeating myself to others. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve tried explaining this to someone and their response was either “I don’t care” or “If you don’t like it then don’t watch”.

The fact that Sia replaced that autistic girl instead of giving her accommodations to make the set and experience more comfortable for her, is just wrong. Instead, Sia just casted her star Maddie. And that to me just doesn’t sit right... Maddie was FUCKING crying to Sia! Begging not to be in the film, due to the fear of being made fun of and getting backlash from this. But Sia pushed her forward anyway, saying it was fine. Shows how much she cares...

I know not every autistic person is the same as me, but please try to understand where we’re coming from. We aren’t hating on this film for no reason. We’re trying to explain why it makes us so uncomfortable. If Sia truly plans on releasing a film representing our community, it should be comfortable for EVERYONE within that community. Not just the handful that like bright colors and loud music. I know not everyone can be pleased, but surely you understand what I’m trying to say. Right?

Link to some of the scenes from the film (SPOILERS): There’s clips out there. And they don’t look good.

That is not how you should treat someone who is having a meltdown. Pinning them down like a criminal? If anything, that’s probably make the meltdown worse! I could understand a bear hug, because some autistic people need pressure to feel comfort. But not this...

This film has got to be the worst portrayal of autism I’ve ever seen.
Please don’t support this. It won’t do the autistic community any good...

And for those of you saying that Sia did her best... No... Sia did not do her best. Three years of research just isn’t enough to understand the complexity of what she is trying to portray. And the fact she used Maddie instead of the original actress really says something.

There could’ve been accommodations set for the girl to help her cope while being on set, but Sia decided that it was just to hard, so she used her usual star Maddie. She even admitted that it was nepotism.

Sia doesn’t give a shit about the autistic community. All this is, is just to promote her new album while trying to gain some more money while doing so. Sickening...

Alright Sia, this is the breaking point. I don’t have autism but this is horrible. It’s so ableist

Before anyone trys to ya know attack a kid, Maddie was forced to do this role because of her contract...., Maddie cried all the time off rec. Because she knew it wasn't right but due to her contract if she didn't do it she could have gotten sued

I'm not autistic but my best friend is. And oh my god, she was crying her eyes out. my best friend LOVES Sia and she was so upset that Sia would do this. I took her on a fidget shopping spree after though :)

I really hope that this movie doesn't end up permanently staining the careers of the actors in the movie (Lesie Odom Jr, Kate Hudson, etc.) I think that Sia made a really offensive mistake here, but it shouldn't be reflected onto the actors.

the fact that neurotypical people are ignoring the voices of autistic and neurodivergent communities alike who are affected by negative stereotypes rlly says something :/

I think part of my issue with this film is that I don't know of any Autistic person who views their world like a ridiculously bright musical with flashy lights everywhere. This film will create incorrect stereotypes that will hurt the Autistic community more than help it. It's hard enough sitting through an IEP meeting explaining how your son functions in society, and then watching this...I...just...there are so many issues with this film that I don't know where to begin. If nothing else, I hope that this movie is a teaching moment of what NOT to do when making a movie.

If sia was handling the backlash and criticism with even a little bit of compassion I really don’t think people would be as upset. She’s degrading anyone on the spectrum though and with her huge platform, it’s very dangerous

this is disgusting. to have a neurotypical person LEARN like literally LEARN how to be autistic when literally no two autistic people are alike instead of hiring all the wonderful autistic actors for this opportunity. so tone deaf.

Any restraint where the person is face down is extremely dangerous and considered physical abuse in many states. It can lead to death. If a person does need a restraint to prevent immediate harm to themselves or others, it should never be done face down. Any restraint should only be done to prevent immediate harm to self or others, as doing so is traumatic to both people.

Let’s not blame ANY of the actors. Not even the adult ones. Because they signed a contract. It initially looked good because Sia initially hired an autistic person to play the role. SIA made the movie look good at first. SIA made contracts that they can’t get out of. Sia is to blame here. They could have been sued if they broke their contracts. Let’s remember who made the movie and made it SEEM like a good portrayal of autism.

As much as we have to improve how we treat POC, LGBTQ+, disabled, etc, in Hollywood, we NEED to learn how to treat autistic people as much. This "movie" is such a shame. EDUCATE YOURSELF.

I am not autistic (but am disabled) and haven’t seen the movie, BUT: it seems to me like even if the casting and such had been done well, that would have helped, but this is still YET ANOTHER movie that centers an allistic character’s journey thanks to an inspiring autistic character (and this happens with all kinds of disabilities as well). The whole setup is tired and smacks of inspiration porn that doesn’t really care about the inner life of the title character. Music’s journey is worth experiencing, not just Zu’s.

i love maddie and want to see this movie but this is seriously inaccurate and just kinda rude. i know it’s acting but they could’ve used a real autistic person for the role

As an autistic myself, it does look very loud and offensive looking. However, I will watch it today and give you an honest opinion from myself. Watch this space.

After watching Dance Moms for so many years I’m sure we can all tell Maddie isn’t dancing or acting her hardest because her heart wasn’t in this.

This is really damaging to see as a person on the spectrum. The bright lights are very triggering to my tics and the way Maddie acts makes me and other people on the spectrum feel hurt. We don't all act like this and it's harmful to think that we do. Most of us look and act like you or try to by masking out in public. There are plenty of ways to fix this movie, which you should take into account. I'm not sure how to put it into words but it would be better to talk to actual neurodiverse people and hire one as an actress for this.

Surprised and saddened to see this from Sia. I don’t blame Maddie as she is a minor but this is so offensive.
