I just kept defending and buffing with Serena hymn of fire and all her other buffs. I did it first time haha took around 8 turns of just defend and one by they all pepped up. Not sure if I just got lucky but I just assumed if the characters keep getting hit they will pep quickly, even the enemy pepped up.

Tried doing this after defeating the slayer of sands. I died! Now I'm back to the autosave, and need to fight the slayer again lol
