I love to read, and I owe a school librarian for that. I was always a good reader - my parents always made me read something, but I never found anything I LIKED reading. Our class was in the library and we were all supposed to pick out a book, but I wasn't interested - I was just going to grab whatever as we were leaving. The librarian saw me doodling instead of looking at books and she saw I was drawing the Enterprise - from Star Trek. She talked to me about Star Trek and could see how it excited me. Then she went to a shelf and came back with a book called "Starman Jones" by Robert Heinlein. I could not put that book down once I started reading, and soon she was bringing me more titles by him - "Red Planet", "Rocketship Galileo", "Space Cadet", and many more.

Beyond the noted important functions librarians perform, my kids have benefited from librarians teaching them 1) research skills, 2) how to evaluate quality of sources of information, 3) critical reading, 4) proper citation of references, etc. They also introduced them to new genres, nonfiction, and substantive periodicals.

Our legacy is contained and shared through books. And the political leadership wants to get rid of books. Wake up people.

The first stage of education is the libraries! Libraries are a great tool for creating life-long learners. To have that superintendent say the kids will "bounce back" is disgusting! All we are doing is sending - oh your poor you arent worth it. We are worth it!!

As a retired teacher who worked in the poorest area of Chino, CA for years, I can emphatically say this is a terrible idea! Children who underperform must be helped not detained and separated so that they feel stigmatized. Ugh. Texas is going backward.
