Oberoi Hotels & Resorts was founded by Mohan Singh Oberoi, born in 1898 in a small village in present-day Pakistan. Facing poverty after his father’s early death, he arrived in Shimla in 1922 with Rs 25, starting as a clerk at The Cecil Hotel. His talent shone through, and by 1934, he acquired Clarkes Hotel, launching his hospitality journey. In 1938, he took over the Grand Hotel in Kolkata, and in 1943, he gained control of Associated Hotels of India. Establishing East India Hotels (EIH) in 1948, Oberoi pioneered luxury hospitality, opening India’s first five-star hotel, the Oberoi Intercontinental, in 1965. His focus on service and innovation, including founding The Oberoi Centre of Learning, elevated the brand.
