Whitby Synod

In this episode, the tide turns as we explore Whitby Synod. In Yorkshire, England, Celtic Christianity was the dominant faith. This was due to the missionary work of St Aidan, who had been sent over from Iona, Scotland. However, 664 A.D. was a pivotal point where crucial decisions were made, such as the date for Easter. Colman was overruled and left England to return to the Isle of Iona, this then followed with four dark centuries for England. Later, the Danish Vikings swept through England further affecting the future of Christianity in the British Isles, turning the tide away from Celtic Christianity as Paganism returned.

It was after the Synod of Whitby in 664 that the British Church turned Roman. This is an excellent video on the matter as it is largely neglected or ignored in most churches today.

Good stuff, but still advocating for more of a reflection of women in the early Christian Church-- they WERE THERE. I believe you missed an opportunity to talk about Hilda. Wikipedia states: "Bede describes Hilda as a woman of great energy, who was a skilled administrator and teacher. As a landowner she had many in her employ to care for sheep and cattle, farming and woodcutting. She gained such a reputation for wisdom that kings and princes sought her advice.[5] She also had a concern for ordinary folk such as Cædmon, however. He was a herder at the monastery, who was inspired in a dream to sing verses in praise of God. Hilda recognized his gift and encouraged him to develop it. Bede writes, "All who knew her called her mother because of her outstanding devotion and grace".[6]"

The debate was not about the date on which Easter should be observed. The debate was whether to keep Easter (a Pagan celebration) or the Passover.

our schools in Newbiggin, Northumber1and were split into 4 groups and i c0u1d never understand why the names were "Cuthbert" "Oswald", "Aiden", and "Bede"? not sure bout last one but they all were different colours and there was always minor competition between them, this was in primary school and middle school but by the time we got to high school 1990s it was all phased out
