In this video, we learn about the common pochard.

Quick facts:

• Lifespan: Three years (average)
• Average size: 46 cm
• Average weight: 930
• Average wingspan: 77 cm
• Family: Anatidae

Description:

The common pochard is a medium-sized waterfowl. It is often confused with the North American redhead and the canvasback. The male is pale grey with feint intricate patterns. It has a distinctive red head and neck, and a black chest and rump.

The female has a brown head and neck and a greyish-brown body. Both sexes have long, flat black duck-bills with a single pale grey band across, but it is less prominent in females than in males.

Vocalizations:

Pochards are typically quiet birds but can become vocal during the breeding season. Males produce low, whistling, and wheezy calls, while females make hoarse growling and raspy noises.

Distribution:

Common pochards are native to northern Europe and small pockets in West Asia. They migrate south for the winter as far as North Africa. Resident birds have established in other parts of Europe and Asia.

Habitat:

Common pochards inhabit marshes, estuaries, lakes, and slow-flowing rivers.

Diet:

They mostly feed in water by diving or dabbling. They mainly feed on aquatic plants, but they also eat snails, insects, and small fish.

Reproduction:

Common pochards are seasonally monogamous and breed in pairs or loose groups. They nest in shallow scapes in the ground lined with vegetation and down. The nest is often near or surrounded by shallow water.

Females lay up to ten greyish-green eggs. Their nests are often subjected to brood parasitism by other pochards and even by other species. The incubation lasts up to 28 days, and the chicks fledge at around 53 days on average.

Conservation:

In some parts of the world, population numbers of the common pochard are on the decline due to hunting and habitat loss. They are listed as vulnerable by the IUCN and protected by the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds.
