Clan Hunter is a lowland Scottish Clan originating in the Ayrshire district. It is believed that Hunters were of Norman origin and arrived in Scotland by invitation of David I. Once in Scotland they were granted the lands of Hunter's-toun. The first Hunter on record in Scotland was William Hunter who was appointed as Royal Huntsman in the 12th century and responsible for providing meat to the Scottish Court.

The motto of the clan is Cursum Perficio which means "I accomplish my course", and the clans crest features a hound dog wearing a crown around its neck.

The historic seat of the clan is Hunterson Castle, located in West Kilbride. A tower was built sometime in the late 15th century by the clan. In the 17th century a house was added to the original tower to provide accommodations. In the 19th century a new house was built on the property just north of the castle called the Hunterston House. In the 20th century much of the estate was acquired by the govenment and two nuclear power stations were built near by. The family still owns the original castle. It has been in the family for over 800 years or 30 generations.

The Clan Hunter Association was formed to promote allegiance to the clan chief and to promote and preserve the heritage of the clan. There are several clan branches around the world and their members are encouraged to visit Hunterston Castle and arrange a tour.

I'm a hunter and so was my great grandpa. I assume the line came from Scotland as I look an awful lot like the Hunters in Scotland.

Madame Pauline,

I have a question about the tartans. Why are there several different styles of the Hunter Tartan and why is there an ancient one and a modern one? Why does Clan Hunter need a modern Tartan? Why could the ancient one just be the one we always use? Thank you for your amswers!

My Surname doesn't dictate the fact that the Hunter blood doesn't flow through my veins. I am proud of the name and my genealogy. I as well love my Surname just the same, I'm not saying I don't like my Surname.
