I started watching this channel a few weeks ago, and I really love it! I read this biography last year - same edition. It was hard to get into it for a while, but after about a quarter of the way through it, I started to enjoy it. Elizabeth Gaskell was asked by Charlotte's father to write the biography, so I can't see how it could be inaccurate. I was shocked by the attitude of her father towards the food his children should eat - so little and only carbohydrates - no wonder they were all so sickly. Their nutrition didn't improve when they were older because they were used to a sparse diet, and like a lot of people before last century, they had very little understanding of good nutrition . I love your description of this book - I wouldn't have been able to describe it anything like you have.

I really need to revisit this book as I didn't get along with it when I first read it. Your enjoyment of it has encouraged me to give it another try 😊

I will definitely be reading this at some point. It sounds fascinating. In 2018, I read a biography of Madeleine L'Engle called A Light So Lovely by Sarah Arthur. It was thought provoking and helped me to make more sense of Madeleine's books in light of the forces and interests that shaped her life.

This sounds so incredible! You make me want to go on a Bronte binge...
I personally adored the Carpenter biography of Tolkien, even though he strenuously avoided allegory in his work knowing more about him as a person adds such depth to his writing.

This sounds amazing, thanks for the review! I'm definitely going to read this now :) one book I read recently that was really interesting was Meg, Jo, Beth, Amy: The Story of Little Women and Why it Still Matters by Anne Boyd Rioux. It wasn't actually a biography of Louisa May Alcott, but it did go into her life and what inspired her to write Little Women and it was really fun to read.

I read this biography last month and loved it, even if I'm afraid it wasn't completely reliable, according to what I've heard. I read another biography by Laura el Makki and hated it (she hates Charlotte and her father !), so I'm planning to read the books by Juliet Barker next ^^ I'm glad, I also love Elizabeth Gaskell as a novelist !

I have this on my tbr. I don't own the book yet, but hopefully by the end of the year or beginning of next year. If you get a chance to read The Bronte Myth I'm curious to know what you'll think of this book afterwards. I don't think I've read a biography of a favorite author. I have read a biography of Virginia Woolf though and it made me question her writing more than I did at the start.

I feel like you're romanticizing a little bit. The sisters in fact led a very sheltered life, which is what prompted them to make up incredible stories about ones more exciting. This particular biography was also written by a friend of hers, directly in an effort to preserve Charlotte's reputation, leaving out less-flattering events. Charlotte was indeed incredibly talented, but human like the rest of us, and her life was a relatively boring one :) Except for all of the death she had witnessed, but really, who didn't at that time in history. Medicine wasn't what it is.
