Is Cooperation or Coercion the Answer to COVID-19? | Guests: Antony Davies & James Harrigan | Ep 63

Matt Kibbe is joined by economist Antony Davies and political scientist James Harrigan, hosts of the popular Words & Numbers podcast. They point out that coercion is a blunt instrument that, although sometimes necessary, can often do more harm than good. This happens because coercion is the product of a small number of minds enforcing one solution, while cooperation allows many millions of minds to come up with a wide variety of solutions, some of which might just work.

Kibbe on Liberty is a weekly podcast with libertarian author, economist, and community organizer Matt Kibbe. As the president of Free the People, Kibbe has decades of experience in the libertarian political sphere, but in these troubled times he believes that open dialogue is needed to bring people together. This means being willing to talk, and especially listen, to those with whom we might not always agree, trying to understand perspectives that might otherwise be foreign to us.

Kibbe on Liberty's growing roster of guests includes politicians, economists, comedians, writers, radio personalities, activists, journalists, and even a magician or two—with topics of conversation ranging from current affairs to craft beer and the Grateful Dead. So grab a cold one, and settle in for the next hour of Kibbe on Liberty, mostly honest conversations with mostly interesting people.

I really miss their vlog version. It really helped me connect libertarian econ with faces for my teenage daughter. I know video is tougher (I help edit her YouTube dance channel) but it makes it much more personal too.

"If you think it can't happen here, you're crazy." It's been happening since the federal coercive govt. was created in 1790. Centralized control versus distributed control, sovereign authority versus sovereign individuals, you choose. You can't have both. These two political paradigms, authoritarianism and freedom, have been in conflict.

Would it safe to say that Libertarian has an inherited act of collaboration with others to achieve a humanistic goal?

This was a great discussion of the current economic and political decision making. during the pandemic. Why didn't Mr. Mnuchin put the economic risk curve as part of the equation in the "flattening the curve?" I wish Anthony and James were part of Trump's team so they could've stopped Pres. Trump from foolishly risking the economy to deal with the pandemic.

I really liked how Anthony put the numbers on how much was spent to save the number of people's lives. People are going to look at the history of this pandemic scratch their heads why the world shot themselves and the constituents' feet to save a small percentage.

I really like Anthony Davis' "Learned Liberty" videos. My leftist friends hate me for ruining their utopian world

I'm definitely more on the pessimistic side regarding our future. I hope I'm wrong!

If the goal is order, there is only one means that works: individual sovereignty, i.e., rights. All governments exist by instilling in the youth that like parents, authorities should rule, be sovereign over us. Children understand this, accept this, grow up to want this because they form an early emotional connection with parents, transfer it to authorities as they mature, which prevents political growth. If authorities are sovereign, we the people are not. If authorities run our lives, we don't. If fear and threats are used by authority, reason, rights, and choice are absent. I recognize the vast majority are fine being ruled, with a coercive govt., and choose it as a "necessary evil". Their choice is their's to make. They can authorize their slavery. They can't authorize mine. But they believe they can. That makes them my enemy and their own, e.g., they self-enslave.
