Dermatology is an awesome specialty. It’s known for high compensation and a great lifestyle. That being said, it wasn’t for Dr. Jubbal. Here’s what he liked about dermatology, what he didn’t like, and why he ultimately chose not to specialize in it.

The Five Laws of Dermatology:
1. If it's dry, wet it.
2. If it's wet, dry it.
3. If neither of those work, use steroids.
4. If you know what it is, don't touch it.
5. If you don't know what it is, FOR GOD'S SAKE don't touch it.

Before working as a doc, surgery and all the intense specialties seemed super cool, and don't get me wrong surgery is awesome, but after working as a doc for some years, developing sleep deprivation, working in toxic hospital environments and realising everything gets repetitive and routine real quick and loses the novelty it once had, I now value lifestyle way more. So while I agree with all Kevin said about the cons, and I'll even go as far to say that bread and butter derm is kinda boring, I honestly think it's one of the best specialties in all of medicine. Good lifestyle during residency and after as well as really great money per hours worked is a real gift in this life.

Mid level encroachment is such a massive issue. A lot of specialties are in danger of being replaced or downsized at the hands of lesser-trained mid levels, which is a shame. But we know that hospitals prioritize profit above all else, so it’s not surprising

Dermatologists do amazing work. I just finished shadowing one in December. I hated it! But I absolutely respect what they do. I don’t like clinic. I prefer rounding. Bite me 🤷🏾‍♀️

going into derm after all the grueling premed science, and medical school, would probably make me start thinking i wasn't doing work to my full capacity, and i would probably start questioning if i was a real doctor since NPs, PAs, and all sorts of others could do all the same work as me. it seems like it's too easy, and could become mundane. i think 95% of people choose derm thinking they will only work 5-7 hours a day, not have much charting, and get high pay. only 5% are actually into skin care.

How do i trust a skin cancer diagnosis from a mohs surgeon derm who sent the biopsy sample to a dermatopathologist who is his partner and also a mohs surgeon, and the recommendation surgery? And can i get an unbiased second opinion?
