HOW TO WRITE A BEST-SELLING SERIES, TIP #2: CLEAR GENRE

The next element of an anchor/bestselling series that we're going to explore is having a CLEAR GENRE. If you don't know where your book belongs in the Kindle Store or which category fits it best at iBooks, you're going to have a harder time marketing your book than if you did have a clear idea of genre.

Watch this video for some tips on genre and marketing when strategizing your bestselling anchor series.

About Me: My name is Sarra Cannon, and I've been indie publishing since 2010. In that time, I have published 22 books and sold well over half a million copies.

I've made some mistakes along the way, but I've also learned some valuable lessons that I think will help you reach your goals. I can't wait to help you learn to make money writing what you love.

Most of my work is very solidly in paranormal. But I do like playing with fantasy as well. Crossing the two can be a lot of fun.

I'm struggling with genre category too. I need to set aside some time to really study the categories and their sub-types. I write about a team of crime fighting women who are in an urban setting, but they are not police or anything like that, vigilante is the closest I can think of^^

Hi Sarra, did you ever do a video on identifying genres using Amazon categories? You mention it towards the end of this video but I notice it wasn't in the next one and wondering if it was uploaded out of this series and I've missed it? Thank you so much for these, by the way - clear articulate and stellar advice in every one. x

I know this is a tough one for so many of us. What genre does your writing fall into? Or do you struggle to define your book within a clear genre?

I have been struggling with "clear genre" for quite a long time. I want to write Paranormal Romance because the readers tend to be more voracious, and my books do have a primary romance bent; however, I am not sure that I am fulfilling my "promise" to the reader. How can I be sure that I am?

Gah… It all makes sense but my anchor series is Fantasy/Detective.... I will eventually be able to produce a book a month which is why it falls into that category but I think I've shot myself in the foot with the odd mix of genres.... Halp!

I thought I was a romantic suspense writer but I’m not getting the readers in romance. I have a happy ending, a romance but it is the suspense that brings the story along for 50-70 percent of the book.

George's theme seems to be - unlikely heroes rise when the obvious ones fall. But it wasn’t clear to my until around the 3rd season

I'm liking your channel so far. But you don't have your website on the description in your about section. And your books are at the very bottom of the description. Maybe put those in a more visible spot?
