The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) does have a license renewal process for senior drivers. The DMV begins to place additional restrictions on license renewals when drivers turn 70. Once a driver reaches the age of 70, they can no longer renew their driver's license by mail or online; they must do so in person.

While renewing their driver's license in person, senior citizens may be required to pass a vision test, and they may also be asked to take a written knowledge test. In some cases, they may also need to take a behind-the-wheel driving test.

However, these requirements are not universally applied to all senior citizens, and the DMV has some discretion in determining when these tests are necessary. For instance, they may require a driving test if they receive information suggesting that a driver may no longer be able to drive safely due to health reasons.

Oh yeah, the test is all about semantics more than knowledge. It is to sap us from time and money. I told my husband some of the questions, and he was appalled. Good thing he didn't have to take the test last year. I can't afford not to take the test, as I have to drive places such as doctor, dentists, eye doctors, etc. When all three choices are or could be correct, then it becomes pure guesswork. I could have passed the above test answers easily. Instead, I need to see what they mean the difference is between stopped and parked, at a curb color, as an example.

I took the test I’m 72 and I failed by one mistakes. Passing is 5 and my score is 6 for all 3 test. I failed because I didn’t fully study about bicyclists I know only the 200 feet to merge to bike lane . But so many questions about it also about the police, the driving privelage. The question Seems the same but different answers so I was confused. Read the book because the question n answere in sample test easy to understand but the real test it seems they twist the question, and for me hard to understand .. so every time you failed the 3 test allowed , you pay again $41 to re apply. Good luck to all seniors..age 70 need to take written test now.. 😢

My husband and I, we both in 80s, never got a ticket, he went to take a test 3
times, didn’t make it
That’s scary to think about it, I hope I make it when my time comes
We both still active and independent
We drive our own car

How about raising the minimum driver age to 25 yrs. Old . This is to stop all the deadly accidents caused by young drivers. That would be in all states.

@My test my prep, what is the difference between Seniors Driving Exam and just a regular Driver Exam?

I notice the memo states that the information is for all drivers in USA states. Is it the same for Canadian drivers? All comments appear to be for USA drivers.

This doesn’t apply here but I hope someone has the answer to my question about getting the Real Drivers license. I’ve been married 4 times but I don’t have all 3 divorce decrees. I do have my last marriage license and my birth certificate. Can I still get my Real Drivers license? I appreciate this study guide for keeping updated on questions. I fair better on written exams rather than oral exams because I can read the questions more than once if needed.

I’m a senior over 70 in California, can I request to take the test on paper instead of the computer?

Question 1 is very suspect, . Yielding is not a safer way to stop. Other vehicles could be traveling toward the same intersection from a different direction. Stopping would be safer for watching for traffic than just slowing down or yielding
