The Story Behind the Iconic Kapital Boro Jacket

Deep Dive: Kapital Boro Jacket from the first Autumn Winter 2013 release with a surprising connection to Louis Vuitton.

For Louis Vuitton's Spring Summer 2013 collection, Kim Jones reached out to Kiro Hirata of Kapital to help source and create boro pieces for the men's runway collection. Which helped further launch Kapital as a global brand after the 1984 founding and 2002 revitalization by Kiro.

In the following season(AW13), Kapital released their own use of boro starting with their take on a Levis Type-1 Trucker Jacket via their Kountry Line (A line launched in 2010 focused on dying and washing techniques. The Kountry line now also takes existing Kapital pieces and re-works them to imbue a one-of-a-kind sense of authenticity.)

This original release utilized scrap fabrics from the LV collab, along with some features that were removed in following seasons like a bootleg levis tab on the pocket, blanket liner, and more handwork throughout. My jacket was purchased from Tommy Ton's @Grailed closet sale in 2020.

Comparing the original to the newest SS22 version, the new version has an updated fit that's longer and wider cut in the body along with the boro fabric itself appearing more produced than earlier versions with less variation throughout the pieces. But even with these differences any garment or object by Kapital utilizing boro fabric is incredibly special and worth checking out.

Great backstory 🌍🌸 question*** To your knowledge is boro denim usually hand sewn? Also could I achieve a similar look in terms of the detail with a singer 4452 heavy duty sewing machine?
