I think the whistle is better on the new ones are better. And they used the exact same whistles, a hancock 3 chime. But the thing about whistles is they're handcrafted outta brass so each one is unique. Also, I LOVE your 2 GS class locomotives. I hate I missed out on those.

The challengers and other models that have the dual smoke unit fans and resistors in one reservoir with the divider in between do have a tendency to go through wicks and resistors fairly quickly but if you get a needle tip dropper and load some fluid in through the whistle and the rest through the stacks and then get another dropper to puff some air through the whistle then that should save you hassle in the future replacing the wick. It unfortunately wont work on models like the y6b that use pretty much the same type of smoke unit but have a long tube connecting it to the whistle which is further back on the boiler.

Truth I got the 2019 3985 new had to send it into lionel for warranty they said 6-8 weeks but thus is the 9th week 😡ain't herd nothing but still in waiting smh
