Thinking about doing a triathlon? Here's how beginner triathletes can know if they're ready for their first sprint or Olympic distance triathlon. Triathlon Taren discusses the amount beginner triathletes need to train and when they can enter their first triathlon, specifically sprint and Olympic triathlons because half-ironman and ironman triathlons require much more triathlon training.

I started in the gym doing Spin classes. Started adding in a swim before Saturday's class, then added a run on the treadmill after. Just finished my first Sprint Tri last Month, have second Sprint Tri next weekend. Had confidence in finishing first Tri because i had already done "Mock Tri's" at the gym. Could only swim a couple laps when first started, if i can do it, anyone can!!

Huge relief when you said "Yes, You are, Anyone can." my first Oly tri is in less than 30 days. it's age group nationals in Omaha. i qualified via my very first tri last year thru dumb luck. i'm certain to be dead last in my age group, and among the last overall. all i want to do is just finish. :-)

You know what I like most about you? I love your attitude. You are the "every man - triathlete." Everyone can do it. Just Start. I have loved everything you have provided. Now, with that said, how about a eating plan. I've got to lose about 20 lbs but I need energy to keep training. What would you suggest? Have you done a daily nutrition VLOG yet. Which one was it?

First sprint triathlon, was already running as I was doing half marathons and such already. 2 weeks before the triathlon I started swimming and biking. Was on a Craigslist road bike with aero bars that wasn't pro fit, not even store fit. I did the swim in 19 minutes, 3 minute transition, 42 minute bike with hills, watch broke so I learned I couldn't use outside support (take wife's watch example) so transition 2 minutes. Negative split the run because I couldn't get my legs under me immediately, 22 minutes. 1:30:00 finish time and was pissed at how much better I could have done had I actually trained.

Also I just registered as a volunteer for Ironman Arizona in November. I plan on registering for the 2018 race!

After just 3 months of run and 2 months of swim and bike training, it was barely thinkable that I could take part in a triathlon race. Moreover I trained mainly in swiming pool and just 3 times in open water (freezing water I would say). Nonetheless, I was able to take part to a race where I had to swim in rough sea, and then bike and run under heavy rain and wind. I managed to finish the race and I arrived among the middle of the group. Guess what's going to happen after 1 or 2 years of training.

I would totally buy the coaching program again if you guys had it loaded in training peaks...

Hey Taren.. firstly, thank you for all your great free content that you post on YouTube. I am from the UK and have never done a triathlon before.. For some reason I signed up for a full IronMan in Barcelona 2020, I've always been fascinated by IronMan, and figured, since I turn 40 next year, if I don't try now then I probably never will.. problem is, I'm not a great swimmer or cyclists or runner for that matter. Since signing up I have come across your content on YouTube and need to find a training program. Can you advise me 1. Am I just plain stupid for doing this. 2. If not, would you advise I sign up for team Trainiac? Is team Trainiac available for people in the UK if not, can you advise where I can obtain a good begginer training plan. Many thanks and keep up the great work. Steve UK

well I generally agree with your assessment, I do think that being able to swim the distance in a pool with a bit of stopping compared to non stop in open water is a whole different set of conditions. the are you ready for the swim question definitely needs to include something similar to race conditions.

I know it wasn't covered.. and probably will in the next video you were talking about, but in regards to IM703 swimming is by far my weakest.. so I'm doing your plan for beginners.. (little history I have 1 sprint under my belt but feel this is something I can do). If I'm doing 300-400 non stop.. with the rest stated in the plan, over the next few months I should be ok on the swim portion eh?? I have an analysis coming up as well.

Working on bringing down my oly time of 3:30...Slow indeed...Training with the Taren/Pat plan has been hard so I think I should be well on my way.
