I don't agree that Freud's work was "discredited". Obviously, some of his theories have not withstood the test of time- particularly with the psychology of women. However, when it comes to defense mechanisms, and the instinctual aspects of the unconscious, represents key findings that continue ot serve the field well. Obviously, our understanding and knowledge base has expanded dramatically since the time Freud was practicing- but it represents an important foundation for depth psychology. Jung was more interested in mysticism and the collective unconscious- but both theories have important aspects of the complexities of the human experience to add to our knowledge base.
