The old humble me would have taken this approach, but after years in the Corporate Machine it seems if its at the point you get a bad performance review that is in writing, the boss is trying to get you fired or to quit. At that point its better to escalate your grievances to higher up and try and transfer or negotiate an exit.  Or it could be to justify not giving people raises.

The advice on this video of your boss is the number one customer is good for early on in the relationship with boss to stay on the same page. But the boss is not necessarily the number one customer. Many times your boss is a middle manager and there is a VP behind the scenes observing things and calling the shots and the boss is just a messenger. So Management dynamics are more complex these days.  But its important to talk to your boss early and imply that she or he is the number one customer for you.

My boss couldn't give any clear expectations

The problem is, there is a gap between Perceived Performance and Actual Performance. Keep asking for feedback and if you don't get it or it's vague, then leave.

I know it's an old video but I think it was very useful. Thanks.

That’s a great question! Tell me a bit more about what success looks for me in 3 months, 6 months, 9 months and then map it out and check back in with that manager.
