In 2020, OCSO teamed up with Devereux Advanced Behavioral Health to launch the Behavioral Response Unit (BRU). This co-responder program partners Sheriff's deputies with mental health clinicians to address mental health crises more effectively.

The goal was to reduce mental health-related arrests, decrease baker acts and provide support to those dealing with mental illness and substance abuse.

The results have been remarkable. Since its inception, the BRU has responded to over 8,100 calls without making a single arrest. Instead, they've offered follow-up visits and essential resources to those in need.

The Behavioral Response Unit has had a real impact in our community and is a model for other law enforcement agencies seeking innovative ways to handle mental health crises.
