CultMovie Review 2879 - Cronos (1993)
What's the price of living forever?
Cronos is a throwback Guillermo Del Toro joint from 1993, featured on the Criterion Collection.
A story about an unholy device to grant immortal life, it starts strange and always carries the same seriousness of any Del Toro film. Other directors would steer this to camp, but Del Toro takes his story, his characters, and his movie very seriously.
It also features Del Toro favorites, such as Ron Perlman (Hellboy), a precocious child, enchanting music, creepy effects, and haunting themes.Strange, melodious, and richly told, this simple story is about more than its plot, and its themes about living forever and what it really means to live are well articulated.
Still, even at 90 minutes, it runs long and slows itself down, and ends up more of a long short film than a fully developed feature. I also need to take into account Del Toro's later masterworks, so this one is graded somewhat on a curve.
