Today is the release of the new David Gilmour album; Luck and Strange. It is his fifth solo album and his first one in nine years. It features keyboard recordings by late Pink Floyd-member Richard Wright. The album features the singles The Piper’s Call, Between Two Points and Dark and Velvet Nights.

The idea for this albums started during the COVID-19 lockdowns when Gilmour and his family were performing live-streams. Gilmour felt he could break with his past and make distinctive new music. Does he? Find out in this review!

Track with Romany is fantastic. After one full listen, the rest of the album is average but I do like the second and last song.

I loved Island. I did not love Rattle, although two tracks were good.
I did not expect to like this new album. But...
I love this album
All but one of the songs are excellent. Romany has a beautiful voice.

Scattered is one of DG’s best from his solo catalog.

Well he's 78 years old... with that said it's better than DSOTM Redux. Glad to add it to my collection.

He should do a whole album with his daughter singing…she kills it.

Unbelievable to get great albums by Nick Cave and David Gilmour and Jon Anderson.

My humble opinion: I still think about how exciting Pink Floyd's music was. And that excitement is mainly due to the music they made in the seventies, with masterpieces one after another, from Dark Side Of the Moon to The Wall, and you have to admit that the person responsible for making that music sound exciting was Waters, with his narrative, concepts and lyrics. It was in that period that Gilmour shone the most, because his way of playing was enhanced thanks to Waters' powerful narrative. That's why now when I listen to Gilmour's solo albums, they sound good, it's well-made music, but that's it. On the other hand, when Waters releases a solo album, at least the exciting ingredient is assured.

Such an uninspired review. And you're dead wrong about his voice too BTW. Yes his voice is dreamy. But if you think that's all he can do then you've obviously never heard The Nile Song, young lust, Not Now John, and countless others. Bc when he fries his voice like he does in those songs, he completely blows Roger's vocals of the stage. This is one of the main reasons his voice is all over Dark Side with Roger only coming in for the last two tracks. He's a vocal powerhouse to which Roger can't hold a candle to. And news flash... music is subjective to the ones listening and the ones creating. So if you wants to call his Best work since Dark Side. He can do that.

I think that at the age of 78, Gilmour is entitled to make whatever music he chooses.

Dark and Velvet Nights is the weakest track on the album. There's very little dynamic range, it's predictable, and the entire soundscape is muddy. Scattered made the strongest impression on me. A very powerful buildup towards the end, with guitar and percussion swells.

I wanted to love this but lyrically it is awful and a snooze fest

Gilmour had a guttural bluesy ‘rock-belt’ vocal around the time of Delicate Sound of Thunder - but obviously hasn’t done too much of that style of singing - probably why is voice still sounds relatively clean and ‘young’ in his advancing years.

I've been listening to Pink Floyd and their members since 1978. I don't agree with this review at all. You show that you don't know them and especially in this record Gilmour said that he has overcome the period. He wants to write what he is now, not what he once was. And his voice, aged, fits perfectly with the music. The album is the most beautiful he has produced as a soloist. The comparison cannot be made with Pink Floyd

I'm somewhere in the middle too.

A bunch of my prog friends are raving about this album, but I can take it or leave it.

I do like his mature vocals though 👍🏻

I really enjoy this album. Love his voice with his straining tone due to his age. The counter point to this is the tone of his guitar playing.

It's elevator music. I kind of liked the title track, but it's more of the same.

I have been a huge Pink Floyd / Gilmour fan all my life but when I found out that his wife writes the lyrics now i was out. Sad but true. Thanks alot for your honest review.

Review number 50, and I don't care. Why so many people have to find something about this album and have to orate about this? Just listen foor yourself, mote then once and make your own mind up.

Maybe David needs a lead singer...if anyone does covers maybe he will see/hear them and have a 'moment' As for writing, I dont think David has been a 'solid' writer of lyrics. Samson has wrote 80% of his lyrics

he needs to do one last album called, passing the torch. Romany doing the lead vocals with him playing his classic solos and then call it a day and let her take over.
