Linux has a problem of often being in the state of "yesterday's solution to today's problems, available tomorrow!"
I had to fight hard to get my dual-gpu quad-display setup to work in linux, and getting VR to work was another adventure, and I haven't gotten around to installing my older games yet. On windows, my setup just works and just works fine.
I do both dread and look forward to when m$ kills win10, as win11 is an absolute no-go for me, and it might actually get people to move to linux at least a bit faster, which might help crack that lag problem...

Got a chuckle when you mentioned YOTLD being a thing in 2018. They have been preaching that over at /g/ since at least the early days of the site. My earliest recollections were around 06 or 07. Fedora Core 4 had just recently came out and was what a lot of folks were up in arms about.

I feel like once Valve releases Steam OS to the desktop space that will be the moment Linux becomes mainstream and will be the final blow to Windows gaming dominance

I prefer way more linux over windows and macOS, said and done, however, within are lots of controversies and actual aspects that still hold it back.
Linux should get to appeal power users who like to do some tweaking once things get solid enough to just for work, and solid enough ecossystems for these people, i already am seeing that for my usecases as time goes by, however to the masses not so sure..
Maybe we can get to about 10-15% if things really go in the right direction, idk.

The year of the linux desktop will start once you just can play every game without any big problems

For me year of the linux desktop was this year. Win10 annoyed me once too often and I install XFCE Mint, and everything just works. Didn't have to use a terminal once. For home users and gamers it's been lack of game support. Steam has made a big difference recently. For office desktops the main thing stopping migrating is MS Office.

I never understood the argument.. Its too hard for users to change from Windows and MacOS to Linux.
Users changed from Windows and MacOS to Android without missing a beat.
Here's the main problem with Linux... As a regular user's platform, there is too much exposed and therefore too much that can be broken by the user.
1. Make Linux updates happen in the background. Maybe notify the user with a prompt and message and then disappear into the background.
2. Lockdown the whole filesystem and OS so the user can't wonder into a trouble(look at what Android did).
Linux is just too wide open and dangerous for the average user or business to consider.

You say that MacOS came earlier but it is based on Unix and same goes for Android. The dividing line between successful mainstream OS and unsuccessful ones is the unifying driving force of a company which has its eye on the target. When the target is freedom and flavors and self catering to every taste you end up with multiple distros which are not only under never ending development towards a theoretical goal but also, for a beginner it is almost impossible to choose and start using a distro. The feeling you have to master a whole jargon which is not only different to Windows or Mac but also between OS is daunting. Last but not least is the plethora of YT channels dedicated to linux with thousands of vids of comparison and intro and tutorial that are teaching you nothing.

I like my developer experience on macOS and everything Just Works, but I don’t like Apple’s hostility to repair or Microsoft spying on me and making their OS more bloated.

Meanwhile Linux distributions are all fragmented with their packaging and desktop environments, making it hard to unify the community and making proprietary software companies feel like it isn’t worth the trouble to port their software.

Things could be better all around.

I hope you recover soon from the *cough*cough*

I have had a few opportunities in my career to hear from project stakeholders who told me they were glad we did not automate everything we planned because to do so would mean larger material mistakes would have been made immediately.

The year of the Linux, er, GNU/Linux desktop has already happened - and will happen later, in the future.

The hobbyists are already using it. Anything beyond that will never happen until the community, the contributors, etc. embrace the needs of business types - they are the majority of computer users.

What is being said in this video is total BS. It is complete nonsense.

But if we want to be a majority - we absolutely must cater to the needs of the majority of computer users.

HELLO!

Linux desktop user interfaces are not user friendly, and before you rage let me explain. The problem is actually having to much choice. Having the option to choose your complete desktop and lots of other things is something for people interested in tweaking, meaning geeks like you and me. But more then 95% of the world population are what we call users, they are not interested in learning more then absolutely needed for the thing they want done. And if they don't know something they most of the time ask a fellow user (who also does not know a lot). So what helps is 1 user interface that does never change to much over time, and they can grow into in a course of let say 10 years or so. That is how Apple sells their OS, which is actually based on Linux if you go back far enough in history. Also tweaks that are made to a GUI must be done sparingly and only to improve usability for this 95% user group (not the active Linux community because they are mostly the power users). Having a GUI does not mean you magically became user friendly.

the amount of errors you get installing and running linux vs windows/macos is just insane. thats why you wont see the year of the linux desktop. ppl dont want to search a solution for a single error.

Ever single Youruber get this wrong. Why linux is not adopted. There is only 1 reason. Not one youtube gets it. 1 reason and 1 reason only. People do not change their OS. What ever OS comes on there device is what it will be thrown away with. Nearly every android phone will always and only run android, and IOS even Windows mobile that was all those devices would see. People do not change their OS. To prove this Nearly every Chrome OS device that is linux still only runs the complete trash Chrome OS. People do not change their OS. Chrome is at 10%. The people who do change there OS are mostly programmers and nerds and they make up about 4% and those are linux users. If you saw a well made linux laptop that was affordable as in better and more affordable then windows or chrome. The you would see a bunch of linux systems and most would never get their OS changed. So get it right it has 0 to do with what the OS is or offers. People do not change there OS.
