More advocacy for people friendly streets, please! I love seeing the more human side of what navigating our cities is like and how it could be improved. Keep it up, GCN! Much support as a cyclist and transit user in Los Angeles.

Noticed this for years. When you open your eyes you'll see how much our infrastructures are all about cars first.

It isn't for speed, it's to enable larger vehicles to turn without mounting the pavement.

I like where the content is shifting, people-oriented places are important

Right, so you want the reduce the radius of the turn โ€” that's OK for a car โ€” but what about larger vehicles? Like a bin truck for instance? Or a bus? How are they supposed to negotiate a junction where the turn has a tiny radius? They will either have to cross onto the opposite side of the road to make the turn or else mount the foot path! ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿผโ€โ™‚๏ธ

Streets are like a moving sidewalk. Cars that impede the flow are equally scoffed. There is an infrastructure issue, true, but itโ€™s borne of economics as much as consideration of cars over bikes. There are so many reasons for a change, as youโ€™ve cited, but until cities, counties, and countries are willing to make a change, momentum is against it. Keep up the fight, maybe we can make a shift in said momentum!

Very interesting take on traffic design. North American cities are so automobile centric itโ€™s ridiculous.

Chiller
ะะฒั‚ะพั€

If the crosswalk were up the street a bit, the pedestrians would be less visible to traffic. Also, the flares are to allow clearance for large vehicles. Surely there's a compromise but I don't think it rises to non-driver persecution or a prejudicial biased preference to cars.

Itโ€™s not about speed. The bell mouth is to do with the turning circle of large trucks to turn safely without mounting the kerb and squashing pedestrians.

Never clicked, but wow, so obvious. Really enjoyed this.
Hopefully, change a few minds.

I always thought the flared entrances/exits were to allow more room for large vehicles to turn. Can you imagine a bus trying to turn if it was a straight t-junction? I agree with your view on the matter. The infrastructure IS too focused on cars but I think you are wrong in this particular situation.

netherlands is much smaller and they made walkable towns work

joorbombas
ะะฒั‚ะพั€

Thatโ€™s a bad example to be honest . The road isnโ€™t at 90 degrees to the main road and if that was a shaper corner, cars wouldnโ€™t be able to get round in one go, but would have to reverse to get around, and near impossible for longer vans . Check out the distance camera angle to see what I mean . Itโ€™s not favouring car drivers, itโ€™s a street that has been around longer the motor car, and has been adapted over time .

ะะฒั‚ะพั€

Say what?!? Pedestrians have a right of way crossing those things since last year. So now those flared exits are to allow drivers and riders time to use for other things... Like watch YouTube shorts on their phones... Oh crap, the police!

Yes agree, people need to get more life in their legs, some people drive everywhere & hardly use half the body

marksimpson
ะะฒั‚ะพั€

Oh for god sake. There are these things called fire engines and bin lorries. They have larger Turing circles than cars.

jamesboo-so
ะะฒั‚ะพั€

because cars can only be on the road, humans can be anywhere it want

mannyechaluce
ะะฒั‚ะพั€

Yes I actually did. The bike industry is pushing carbon frames and electronic drivetrains on the average rider, yet the hills arenโ€™t getting any flatter.

ninertangojuliet
ะะฒั‚ะพั€

Yes but if you are walking straight down that road it is only 17 steps to cross the road. If you had to walk up the street to cross then back down again it would be way more than 17 steps

The junction is eversley road and gower road.

Eversley road has a little high street with shops amd restaurants, definitely not a little quiet residential street.
Onlybfkared junction out of about 20 and that is for lare delivery vehicles and such.
The road and junction predate cars.
It is not designed to make cars go faster.

This is lies and propaganda
