For me it's a toss up between the two alcoholic sheriffs of Dean Martin and Robert Mitchum. Martin brought a vulnerability to the role while Mitchum was opposite and brought a rough edge to the role-someone not to be trifled with (when sober).

Originally, Ward Bond was supposed to have survived having been shot but he died in real life & the story had to be rewritten to deal with that.
