What if it was a Leica?

Ok so this episode is a conversation starter, I really wanna hear yall's opinions on this!

Also as pointed out in the video I (stupidly) chose f1.8 and my D.O.P is tiny.
This is because I am very spontaneous and get excited when it comes to vlogs neglecting important technical stuff but focus in the subject. But I'm learning :)

It’s because it’s a desirable object, a status symbol, hyped by numerous YouTube photographers, and of course it’s fascinating history and famous photographers who used it etc etc…sure it can make a beautiful image (used by somebody with a good visual sense)
But so are many other cameras which don’t possess all these other qualities.
I guess we want it in same way we want any other expensive/beautifully designed stuff
And yes it might encourage a person to go out and take more photos which in turn can make him a better photographer…if that works for you than great.
Btw you can see a similar trend in the medium format film camera arena where Hasselblad tick all the same/similar points.

traveling in Europe in the 70's I found a Leica llla for$50 in Germany . I had been using an Olympus 35rc
until it was stolen and I had to start using the Leica . it changed my feeling for photography, and it became my main hobby . in the film days, leicas were more reasonable, and I used an m2 for many years . with digital, I kept looking for that rangefinder experience, and after many cameras I found the fuji x100 cameras, and used the x100t for many years, and still use it . you are correct that leicas are
way out of my price range, but 3 years ago I found an M8 for under $1000 . it is the camera I will pick up first if I am outside during the day . I like the rangefinder experience with a depth of field scale on the lens, and a very simple menu . it is the experience . I am not a better photographer with the leica,
but I do find I can react more quickly as a street photographer . I am just waiting for an m10 if the prices ever come down . hard to own a camera that is worth more than my car .

Slippery slope my friend. Went from X100f to an M8 last Feb. I just "needed" to know what it was like.

Yes, the photography would be different (if you ended up with a Leica M). The lenses don’t focus as close, so that immediately gives you a different look. Also, you may be more inclined to take it to more places.

Just take a drive to a Leica dealer and try one. That’s the only way you’ll know. I switched from Sony A7R3 to Leica M10 3 months ago after trying one in a camera store. Very happy with it :)

You're asking the wrong question. What you should be asking is why do people shell out such money for a Leica? Hint; for the most part it has nothing to do with boosting one's ego nor the assumption that shooting with a Leica will make them a better photographer. Then again, if you have to ask you wouldn't understand.

I cannot agree with you more that any camera can make amazing photos. Most photos we love symbolize something - that doesn't have to do with resolution. Film photos, grainy, like Koudelka's gypsies. The x100v is just as capable as a Leica in that regard - it's more about timing, passion, and skill.

However, I will say that what makes a Leica special, which EVERY camera is capable of but is especially true and where Leica gets it right, is in RESTRICTION. As a researcher I can tell you: it's not by the availability of options but in the restriction of options that we find creativity. Leica film cameras are that: an expression of minimalism that forces a style of thinking due to its restriction. But in terms of digital, it's all the same. If you talk film, it's another story.

Leica as a brand, like Rolex, was a camera that (due to many factors) wound up in the hands of more famous photographers over time and thus made many of the outstanding photos. It could have been a Kodak or a Graphlex. But Leica, as a tool, fit the job better, was easier to use on the fly. And thus, it became the symbol we so desire today for its mechanical purity and astounding history. But THAT doesn't make people a good photographer. What it does do is give people with enough money the feeling that they are channeling Leica's history. It's a religious experience, as DeLillo may say. Similarly, a Rolex doesn't tell time better than a Casio, but it's a mechanical marvel with a great history that many people appreciate.

So no, you won't necessarily shoot better shots having a Leica. You'll just be closer to the purist state that captured so many incredible images on film throughout the years. And you'll look sexy doing it.

Feel your pain. Leica is the ultimate symptom of G.A.S. and you nailed it. It's not what you use to shoot, it's what you shout and how you shoot it.😀Keep preaching it brother, we are with you. 👏

Your images will be the same. But the resale value will be amazing if you pass the camera on. Every other digital camera drops after 2 years. And the Leica film cameras are going up and up and up... Leicas are like highend watches, cheaper ones still tell time but are not an Omega or Rolex. Sold my Leica Q2 and picked up a Fujifilm X-Pro with an 18mm. I shoot the same. Little regret. Money back in the bank. Cheers! Subscribed.
