Thank you for spreading awareness of van theft Mark

As a tech in the Dealer, I've seen an average of 8 wires or less on an OBD port. What I've done is insert a dummy port and move the factory port. The dummy port has battery power and a ground but no communication lines to "talk" to the vehicle.

12:08 "Called the police, didn't even bother to come out"... Meanwhile, next door's just had bailiff accompanied by 2 uniformed coppers for, wait for it - non-payment of tv license!

Sadly whilst changing the OBD port is a good idea, you don't need all 18 wires to be connected.

A better idea is to remove your OBD port and hide it in the car somewhere, but fit another OBD port in its place. Some people deliberately mix the +/- wires to blow up unsuspecting computers plugged into that port, but you then run the risk of them torching your car!

A better idea is to goto a scrappy, take an ECU with the plugs and decent amount of wires attached, and have it separately powered up and obviously not connected to the car, the replacement OBD port is linked to that ECU and it can be interrogated and probed by the thieves kit as if its the real one, they won't know why its not working correctly, just that they can communicate with it but its not actually doing what they want it to do.

That way they end up suspecting its their kit not working, and as its taking too long to do what they need, they walk away and either target someone elses car or decide to abandon the rest of the night because they think their kit is duff.

Surprisingly, its not many wires from the ECU that need to be active for the OBD port to be able to work, but it will "work" enough that the thief simply runs out of time and walks away.

Mark, I bought a focus rs mk3 from copart which had no keys. Ford said that it's not straight forwad and the cost could be £2000. They have to change everything. I went on the Internet and purchased for £299 a box that plugs in the obd port. This box takes 20 seconds to programme a key. I can also remove the previous owners key data as well. Bloody crazy. I ve been in the car industry for 35 years now, and at the end of the day you'll cannot beat a hidden kill switch. Cost absolutely nothing to install.
I also think the police are to blame. These expensive cars are going abroad in containers. It's not rocket science for the police. They just need to get out of their cars some times and do some footwork.

the information you've provided in the last three/four vids is actually brilliant, nice work Mark!

Brilliant !! Sheer incompetence from every car manufacturer. The fact they want to sell more cars to replace your stolen vehicles is beyond a joke.

Your videos recently have been very engaging and you're doing an excellent job of exposing car related issues in the UK - keep it up

I saw a FANTASTIC sticker on a van once, it read: Please do not break into my van and steal my tools, I need them so that I can pay your benefits. 😂

Thanks for having me on the video wish I could have told you more but that level of information shouldn’t be in the public domain. 👍

I remember when my parents were in Nigeria almost 40 years back they had a lock on the side of the gear shifter which needs to be locked when ever you park the car . This lock literally cuts off the fuel supply from the tank to the engine. So even if someone takes the car, it will not travel more than a mile and it stops due to no fuel. The lock was placed in such a way in between the driver seat and the center console which is unnoticeable and not easily accessible. Every company should come up with something like that..

@markmcCann64 Thank you so much for inviting me over for part 2, it was an absolute pleasure to be part of this video. I really hope people take extra measures for securing their vehicles.

Fun fact: Toronto Police told its residents to leave their keys at their front doors to avoid coming in contact with car thieves 🤣🤣🤣🤣

As I always said to anyone, the cheapest and safest way to secure your car is to add a switch on/off linked onto a wire for your car to start for example fuel pump earth/power wire, ecu earth or power, starter motor solenoid wire, gear selector switch, crank/camshaft sensor the choice is endless. All you have to do is to slice a wire and add a switch placed somewhere you only know about it, take your time and hide it properly and hard to reach out, you can even get a remote powered switch to on/off the signal carried by that wire and you're done, you can't take the car if it doesn't start. Yes they can damage stuff around the car trying to find it, but it will cost less than having the car completely gone and insurance pay discrepancy prices.

This is great content, not just for the entertainment factor, but for the genuinely useful information being shared too. You've shown us the problem and given us a solution, absolutely cracking journalism!

Great set of vids bringing light to this. As a motorbiker, welcome to our world. The need for additional security is more important than ever with steering locks, handbake locks, wheel clamps and such.

Most thieves are looking for easy targets and will often move on from your vehicle if there is an easier target. Unless they really want it of course

I had a fuel pump go on my jag, which gave me the idea to fit a kill switch to the fuel pump on my next car. Works a treat!

But if car manufacturers refuse to do anything, won't they eventually lose customers? Why should anyone bother buying/financing their dream car (or even a normal everyday car), if it can be stolen in seconds?
