As a small business owner I have to admit that being forced to pay for another stat holiday as an apology to indigenous peoples for the government letting Preists molest them and residential schools to destroy their culture seems a little unfair. If The government was the one paying wages for that day, I would actually think it was about the importance of that very real issue rather than politicians buying votes with my money. I'd much rather see a long-term strategic plan that puts money in communities, clean drinking water, actual economic development that is sustainable for the long-term and education for not just indigenous communities but for Canada as a whole. But nope, I just get to pay for my staff not to come in for a day they'll never even think about.

Of course residential schools are wrong but I didn't do it .
History is full of injustice and every society has been a perpetrator and victim, at some point in history .
Compensate the survivors, but stop the national guilt trip

after that: a representative of the First Nations occupies the chair of the Prime Minister of Canada.
then this is true reconciliation.

The truth is that they wanted to build the schools on the reservations but the elders did not want the young natives to read and write while the elders could not. When they just started talking about residential schools CBC had a story talking to past students and most had good things to say about the schools. You will never see the photos of smiling children any more, it does not fit into the narrative. In 2024 in some countries children would love to be educated but somehow it is turned into a bad thing in Canada.
The truth is the natives had war, slavery, starvation, tribes were wiped out and froze in winter.
