I got good memories of looking for them with our dad when we was 7 miles from Uckfield and cooking, them on the fire in the family home.

Another great family video Nick, Fin is a star, keep him safe but don't keep him away, I was brought up with open fires and cooking ranges, as such was trusted around them and cutting fire wood with a hatchet at seven, what I'm saying is as he gets older he will learn quickly what is safe and what is not, then you can relax knowing your child is safe around the fire, or axe, or knife etc, because you have taught him how to use the said 'tool' correctly, that kid is gonna have really jealous mates,
Stay safe, look after your family.

Roasted chestnuts are a must this time of the year, together with chestnuts mash w sweet cream. I’m very fortunate that chestnut “culture” is still very much alive in Zagreb, Croatia where I live. The fact that Zagreb’s neighboring mountain is full of chestnut trees helps!

I enjoyed that! Unfortunately the American Chestnut that is native to the US and southern Ontario Canada was devastated by a blight in the early 1900’s, so foraging for them is a thing of the past. Good folks are working on getting resistance into the genome, so hopefully the mighty chestnut 🌰 can reclaim its place in our forests some day!

Showing my age now, but I dimly remember a guy coming around in the winter selling (hot) roasted chestnuts, thanks for the blast from the past!

Delicious, and sweet chestnut wood itself = fantastic, durable timber for outside use, , if oak isn’t available, sweet chestnut is a good choice 🤙

I think their like a mix between burdock and potato. We don’t get many ripened up in Scotland unfortunately.

I collect Chestnuts eery year, When cooking on top of my log burner I cut a small nick in them to stop them exploding. I only hope that this splendid video isn't going to give me too much competition.

Mrs Woods added sweet chestnuts into steeped orchard fruit and brandy to make her own mincemeat for mince pies 💪🏻

It’s the time of year again!!
Why did you leave them for a couple of days before you roasted them?

I have noticed the Sweet Chesnut trees are not as abundant in our forests and woodlands so much nowadays, one has to search for them, as kid's they were as common as the Horse Chestnut tree's.
