Tolkien did a great job dealing with potential plotholes in his writing. Make every book canonically a biased inaccurate account of the story so we the audience are left to wonder what's real and accurate. I love the element of the Hobbit that we're not actually seeing the nitty gritty real story. Like how according to Gandalf, Bilbo uses humor to cover up his obvious ptsd. So all the lighthearted or funny scenes in the hobbit were probably extra traumatic for Bilbo, and he just glossed over it. All the parts of the book that seemed rushed were probably another part of Bilbo's adventure that was extra dark and traumatizing. Tolkien is awesome.

That's so meta because Tolkien himself was drawing on his own experiences of fighting in the trenches on ww1 to make a compelling story for his children.

It’s very World War I vs World War II. The Hobbits got the sanitized glorious WWI version from Bilbo and went straight into WWII where it was bigger and worse.

I do think as adults they should have understood that Trolls and Dragons and Battles weren't as fun as Bilbo made it seem tho, lol. Of course Gimli understands - the Royal Line of Erebor was wiped out during The BATTLE of the Five Armies!

Edit: the DIRECT royal line was completely wiped out, my bad. The kingship passed to a not-close cousin.

I recall that in The Hobbit, roughly once per chapter, Bilbo was thinking how much he wanted to be back home in his chair by the fireplace (not for the last time).

The whole point of the Hobbit, our version of Bilbo’s story, is that adventures kinda suck but sometimes you come out the other side a new person.

Once my parents told me about a movie they liked, they laughed and had a fun time telling me about the quirks of every character and how they dealt with things going wrong at every turn. I was sure it was a comedy! It was 1999 Unforgiven, with Clint and Morgan Freeman. Great movie, not a comedy. Sometimes people aren't very good at telling histories...

Imagine what it would have been like one of the dwarves who knew the accuracy of the story, to hear the hobbits recounting it like it was a picnic!

They would either be unimaginably insulted, or develop a profound and unfounded respect for the hobbits as a culture!

Dwarves: "They're not just like that, _they're_ *ALL* _like that!_ Take one on a journey to hunt a dragon! Unless a human takes care of it, the whole thing will probably result in lunch and dinner conversation!"
