Today’s song is called ‘The Beast Within’, and it is inspired by a gothic novella of Robert Louis Stevenson called ‘Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde’.

The story tells us of Dr. Jekyll, a kind and respected scientist who creates a potion to separate his good and evil sides. This potion transforms him into the cruel and violent Mr. Hyde, who walks around the city committing horrible crimes.

The novella focuses on the concept of duality of human nature. According to it, we all have two sides - one that is socially acceptable and moral, and another that is darker and more primal, which causes an eternal struggle between good and evil within us. That is the beast within, hiding and waiting for his opportunity to break free. Dr. Jekyll shows us how the boundaries between these identities can be blurred, and as the result demonstrates what really defines a person - not what you are, or what you’re inclined to be, but your own actions, your own choice.

I own a paperback of The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde that I've held onto for years being one of my fave literary works, along with a hardcover collection of Edgar Allan Poe's poems and short stories. The duality of man, rationality and instinct, was something that fascinated and stuck me since first coming across this story.

To be doomed by another. And yet that the other is us is quite a privilege to my thoughts to ponder about to my other side is so stricken by the thought its hidden . A conversation of intriguing process i can carry and have carried . Neither had i wanted any one to know for the judgement others sre quick to throw without even a question. I met my other self. She very unfortunate. She dreads the mornings . She craves to be desired . The other she pushes away. She hisses at closeness . A war fought to feel as a whole, as one has raged on always inside. As a kid my bedroom floors tried pulling under them. A tornado 🌪️ spun around the house in dreams so i couldnt escape, even though i swear it was reality .
