The problem with Griffith is that he always had it in him to sacrifice his comrades for his dream. He just didn’t have to sacrifice them until his body was destroyed and the eclipse happened. I think Guts leaving also kinda broke him in a way

This is the only berserk edit I've seen that conveys the same emotion as the manga ending. The heartbreak, the betrayal, and the nostalgia. Berserk is an amazing experience and this conveys it perfectly.

That's what I love about Berserk. We as reader/viewer don't really know if Griffith really changed. Griffith himself doesn't believe to have changed. But there are still moments where we see a side of Griffith were he put his own life on the line to protect Guts. If that was out of personal interest to keep his most powerful tool or because of compassion to the person who was dearest to him we don't know.
Hence the line "Tell me, do I need a reason each time I put myself in harm's way for your sake?"
