The key lesson that I have learned over the years on youtube: don't by anything advertised on youtube and don't buy anything pushed be any YT influencer.

It is incredibly disheartening to see so many content creators pivot to scamming the fans that helped them become famous, but it is really refreshing to see people like Coffeezilla who don’t actively try to screw their own audience

The way YouTube has squeezed more money that pisses me off the most: YouTube has removed our ability to choose whether or not to show people non-skippable ads. You could be watching our videos and get randomly tortured with a minute-long ad.

28:51 Just a slight correction there. Patrick Boyle is a rapper. That’s why he doesn’t give financial advice.

I did not even realize this video is an hour long, I just thought "Wow, he sure can fit a lot of information into 15 minutes!" I appreciate how thorough it is!

The problem is not that WeWork failed and lost a bunch of money, it's that their former founder just went on to get even more investment money after that. That means you can just bs your way into money.

I hope for the total collapse of social media influencer culture.

Same thing happened to reviews on YouTube, went from actual everyday users of products to corporate-sponsored “reviewers” with their “disclaimer” that says “I got it for free, but has no effect on my review”.😜

tbh none of the things that turned out to be a scam seemed legit to me in the first place.

Remember to put adblock on your elderly parents and grandparents computers and sponsorblock if they use youtube

Especially these days it's embarrassing and distressing to admit that your trust as a fan was abused by someone you used to look up to, and even if they summon the courage to go public about it it's not like your average person can afford to seek legal restitution. Most of the money lost is significant on a personal individual level but 5-50k is still chump change as far as these grifts go.

They seem to be more concerned with the volume of people they can fleece with the scam in one go as a probable one-off trade against their reputation and audience than they are with targeting high net worth individuals who are likely too savvy or used to snake oil pitches for this sort of wide-net strategy to pay off to the same degree.

I don’t even get why people “trust” famous people just cause they like their art. the first thing I ask is “what does Kevin hart know about banking he’s a comedian?” But when videogamedunkey opens a gaming studio and makes video game that’s something I could get behind, even if he had made a game that sucked I wouldn’t feel duped cause a video game was on brand or a natural path for progression.

Athletes, actors and singers are also overpaid and overrated. Most of the world needs to step away from celebrity worship in general.

the truth is that I actually find this content valuable, and I would tune in. I have found in the last half of 2024 these videos are a good bit more informative than not. Lots of evidence based analyses. I like that.

Car dealerships have made millions scamming people. And will continue to do so. I think scamming is still a doable business.

57:10 The saying “Everything you need to know about personal finance fits in a 4x6 index card.” comes from Helaine Olen and Harold Polack. It was just a turn of phrase they’d use, but enough people took it literally and kept asking for the index card that they actually made an index card of rules and eventually wrote a book called The Index card breaking down the rules. Highly recommend the book!

Also- on the grift
When you become the grifter you also get the stigma, when you become the dropshiper- you get the stigma, when you become the scalper (or how the flat sellers try to call themselves "Investors")- you get the stigma.
When you try to get rich quick you will get the rightfully applied stigma - noone wants to listen to a scammer, noone wants to listen or learn from a cheater. When you're found out with your grift: your rep is over. And you will be found out very quickly, as the saying goes "a lie walks on short legs"

Why do I find myself just like falling asleep to this? Like I’m interested, but I’m. Just putting it on right before I fall asleep.
