"You are the fortunate one" turning into "we're not the fortunate ones" is really what changes it for me

I didn't even know there was a male version lol Cyndi's version is so iconic!

Cyndi Lauper's version will always be the BEST! Love it! Very first tape I ever owned, and I played it on my little pink boom box! Yep, I'm old! Got 'em both for Christmas when I was in 2nd grade! 😎

Honestly the original song is beautiful. Wouldn't say it's misogynistic it's about a guy that just wants to settle down

The original lyrics is about sex. Cindi's ersion isn't strictly about sex

I always thought it was about girl's getting together, going on trip, being free, shopping. I like this song especially when I am shopping after working hard at work. Like I worked hard, now it's time to do what I desire and be free.

The male version its about a boy not having a girl because they are sex craved.

The female version its about a girl being free. Her expressing herself. Yet still being a failure to school/society perception. Thats what I based it off from the first sentence.

The song was written by Robert Hazard. Hazard gladly turned it over to Lauper, but was entitled to royalties and later said that he literally made a living off of it. He was a rock star in his own right, as the front man of Robert Hazard and Heroes, a neo-punk band from Philadelphia that enjoyed huge underground success. Sadly, Hazard passed away in 2008 after battling pancreatic cancer.

Fun fact: Lauper also had another big hit, “Time After Time, ” that was written and arranged by another Philly rock act, The Hooters. Rob Hyman and Eric Bazilian originally wrote the song for their band, but eventually gave Lauper recording rights, and even sang background vocals for her on it. The song is still on The Hooters’ concert playlist to this day.

Girls, just want to have lunch.
Weird Al's version reigns supreme.

The meaning changes completely. Cindy's version is such a beautiful depiction of girlhood. We genuinely just wanna be happy and have fun. ❤

Very subtle changes created a different story. Having the conversation with the mother first, then the father gives the mother authority and switching from the father being 'fortunate' (edit: I thought it said 'unfortunate' at first 😬) to the singer and mother being unfortunate (meaning they as women are limited in certain ways) makes it more about living fully rather than just messing around. It does help so much that the singer is female

His sounded like his family wanted him to settle down, but the girls he was with were on a hot girl summer. 😂

The male version sounds like someone just got their heart broken and needs to vent and searches for validation.

ol buddy went to the club once and went “Father, I have made a shocking revelation😔😔😔 girls at the club don’t want to commit to the dude they’ve known for 4 hours 😖”

I grew up listening to Cyndi and loads of other artists that had similar mindsets to hers and I cannot express how thankful I am for their art and how unapologetic they were/still are about the messages they carry. Their influence helped me find my own voice when the people in my life didn’t bother to and for that I will always be so incredibly grateful.

Personally I see the male version as a guy who has been in so many relationships or just interactions with a girl messing with his feelings/playing games with him. And he’s just trying to feel important because in the later part of that version his mother said that he’s still number one showing his family still cares about him. I see it as a men’s mental support song than anything misogynistic
