A year or two back here in Phoenix, a young woman was 'carjacked'. She immediately got 'off the X' and ran away. The carjackers attempted to drive away - but her car had a manual transmission, and they were unable to move the vehicle. She told reporters she would never own a vehicle with an automatic transmission, as her car wasn't damaged and left intact. A bit later, I saw a Jeep with a spare tire cover, that showed a picture of a 5-speed shift pattern, and the words "equipped with Millennial anti-theft transmission". Made my day. Would love to find an old truck with a 'three-on-the-tree' column shift - virtually 'theft-proof' these days!

Another good reason to have a manual transmission was when "friends" asked to borrow my truck. (Amazing how many "friends" you have if you own a pickup truck). My first question was "Can you drive a stick shift?" The answer most always was no. So I was saved from loaning out my truck to "friends" who needed something moved etc.

I've heard the same stat about automatic transmissions being the prevalent choice of most drivers. In fact a manual transmission tends to be a deterrent to many millennial thieves. Thanks for reminding all of us about the advantages of being able to drive standards.

I drive a 13 speed manual transmission big rig. Used to have 18 speed in mountains. You only use clutch to start and stop.

Another great reason is that you can push start it if the battery is dead!

Manual gears are better in adverse conditions. For example you can keep your revs high but your speed low when driving through flooded roads or fording a river.

All good reasons to learn stick shift cars. I learned to drive with automatic transmissions but in the Army I drove M151, M35 and a few other stick shift cars. While in the Army I was awarded two Expert Driver badges (Wheeled and Tracked) and was tasked with training and road-testing other soldiers. Rental cars overseas were often sticks. Buses and forklifts were sometimes foreign equipment and being able to drive sticks was necessary.

I like how you mentioned needing to know different guns. The 2018 movie, "5:17 to Paris, " pitted a train load of people against one angry young man who had a Kalashnikov and a pistol and some home-made bombs--and a knife. Several victims were injured--except that they weren't victims when they acted. None of them were "intelligence operatives, " at least not that I know of--but bad things happen to good people, to ordinary folks.

Sometimes it's necessary to leave NOW and any transportation is superior to hoofing it. I can drive a bus whether it's a stick or automatic, whether it has a diesel or gasoline engine. The dam upstream has collapsed. Want a lift?

Another reason is if your brakes are damaged you can still stop your car using the gear box

I would 100% agree that people should learn how to drive a stick. All 3 of my kids learned how to drive manual cars. But these newer cars are crap. Not sure what they are doing with them but they are not reliable now and break down way too often. Some of them are catching on fire because of the clutch.

It’s a great skill to have but in another few years time, manual gear shift will become things of the past.
