I speak like the second and no it never works. People lose interest and think I'm not interested in them enough.
When I talk like the first, my energy boosts theirs even more and my interest in what they are saying gets them talking more. It really makes for a good bonding time.

The trick is to find someone who just has conversations that you actually want to engage If someone is doing this I'm going to be able to tell whether or not They are actually interested in what I'm saying or if they're just faking it
