I tried the method of tying flies on with the hemostat. The method I used was for the clinch knot, which used to be said to be a 65% knot. I never break it off, and recently saw data that it is 89 percent, and stronger than the Improved CK. 89% is perfect as it allows one to break off at the hook, should things go wrong, and in most trout applications the strength is still more than enough. The hemostat method worked great, until I started practicing it with smaller hooks, and light tippets. Horrendous messes ensued, as the hook catches on the hemostat, and even the tippet would run up the hinge and get caught. Seems useless for what I would mostly be fishing with in trout applications. 4x on my smallmouth flies, and it works great.
