Washington, DC natives, Herb Fame and Francine Hurd Barker, were put together as a duo by Van McCoy when they signed with the Columbia Records subsidiary label, Date, in 1965. Their cover version of the 1934 standard, Let's Fall In Love, peaked at #13 on the Cash Box chart, week ending 12/10/66. Following that hit, came a succession of other hit singles by The Sweethearts Of Soul, as they were marketed to the public. Close Your Eyes, was released in early 1967 and peaked at #4 on the Cash Box chart, week ending 4/29/67. The original duo would stay together until 1968 when Francine tired of touring and was replaced on the live act by Marlene Mack. Barker continued to be the Peaches voice on their recorded output until Fame halted the career in 1970. He became a DC policeman. Fame then brought the duo back in 1976 with a new Peaches, Linda Greene, and together they had a run of hits from 1976 - 1983, including Reunited, Shake Your Groove Thing, We're Still Together, and I Pledge My Love. Herb Fame again introduced a new Peaches in the 1990's, Patrice Hawthorne, when the duo re-emerged during this decade. Even in the 2000's, Herb Fame kept replacing Peaches with new Peaches, including Miriamm and then Meritxell Negre, the first non-black Peaches. The latest Peaches is now, Wanda Tolson, as Peaches And Herb continues to tour to this day.
