Such an amazing big Cat. The First People to venture into North America. They would have seen Smiladon and other incredible Fauna. A very popular extinct speciman for many today. Great video on this extinct Saber Tooth Cat. 💪🏻🙏🏻✨

Distractingly handsome, eminently watchable, humorous to listen to...
And entertaining to boot.

The shorter hind legs seem Hyena-like to me. And Hyenas are not ambush predators and very well capable of running down prey. So maybe the lifestyles of Smilodon and Hyenas are not dissimilar. Hunting as a pack, pursuing the prey until it's too exhausted to continue and then several cats using their claws and weight to wrestle it down while one of them uses it's sabers to go at the throat of the animal. I don't believe it used ambush more than a pack of lions does.

It should be noted that S. fatalis (and most of its prey) was actually better-suited to our CURRENT climate than a glacial global climate, being a forest specialist rather than an animal of open grasslands.

So it’s an animal that would actually have increased in numbers and range at the end of the last ice age (as it had done during earlier interglacials), if not for us humans showing up.

If I’m not mistaken Smilodon grocils and fatalis may have lived in forested areas while popuater lived in Savannah areas probably lives in forests as well. I also think that it would’ve been a solitary Hunter, since the brain was more than of a jaguar.

A bald sabertooth cat sounds absolutely terrifying.

Is it silly to ask if maybe they used the big teefs to fish for things in the snow and mud? Like they dragged them backwards through silt etc with those big front legs and scooped up little crabbys and fish and turtles to eat?

If you asked me to draw a cartoon of an Old-Timey Naturalist it would look exactly like 0:50.

I love the people in the comments that clearly don’t know anything about these animals.

Every living mammal is an ice age mammal.

Ice age ended with a BANG! Evidence is all over, especially in the states, where you’re from (Ohio) so you should be able to verify this easily.

Have you every checked out the work of Randall Carlson or the Comet Research Group? Their argument makes almost TOO much sense…but I’d certainly be interested in hearing an actual professional’s take on the YDIH that isn’t based on logical fallacies as arguments.

Cheers!
