A river, 3 generations of family and the meaning of life

When the past feels bigger than the future and death whispers for loved ones, a trip to a childhood haunt becomes a moment of reflection on life. Sun Valley, Idaho is where I spent my childhood summers, where my mother and uncles came on the ski train a half century ago, where I've now returned to show my own family. The place feels bittersweet and my husband encourages me to think of the words of Heraclitus and Spanish poet Jorge Manrique.

@paidskn1488 I'm American and my husband is from Spain-- though he's from the Catalonia region so he speaks Catalan to our daughters (they're learning Spanish from their grandparents and some friends).

Kinda reminded me of the Sarah Connor voice-overs in the Terminator series, without the apocalyptic content.

Great existential monologue!

@kyouell I think Montana and Idaho have a very big nature that can be so alluring. I wonder if I had gone to my mother's tiny, rural home town in New Hampshire as a child (we didn't) if the smells and sounds of New England would have drawn me in in the same way. Maybe. Nature is powerful, but I think it's possibly more overwhelming in the more empty western states like ID and MT. Just a thought.

But overall, it doesn't really matter the spot.. childhood memories can create a home.

My grandparents were from Montana and this is how I feel when we go back there. It is home, it will always be home, it doesn't matter that I only went there in the summer growing up and didn't live there myself. It's the place I want my children to remember. Thanks for sharing this with us.

Also, that poem was fantastic. Our river is across the road from our log house, but wow, perfect images to go with it.

There is no going back only an illusion at least in this life going back is still another way of moving forward. This video reminds me of the song stop this train by John Mayer. I really enjoyed this video as it reminds me of my own thoughts which never seem to leave me head. I'm sure there are many people who have these same thoughts and emotions about life.
