Flags leave a memorable impression about a country. Countries take a lot of pride in their flags too. It's safe top assume that countries took picking a flag VERY seriously. However, which flags didn't make the cut? Drew Durnil shows proposed flags for countries across the world. Mr. Terry gives his thoughts and talks about the history surrounding the countries. Estonia has had strong Finnish connections pretty much ever since their independence, as well as their government is ran in a quite Nordic fashion. Also Estonian is in the same language family as Finnish and the two countries even share the same national anthem. Plus there's some history with Estonia and Latvia as they were Danish colonies around the 13th century if my memory is correct.

Estonia is "more nordic" than the other baltic states because Estonia has a culture and language that is more similar to that of Finland's. Estonia has also historically been part of or under the influence of both Sweden and Denmark.

As a Swede I'm sure that I'm biased but I do like the Nordic cross, it's way better than the tri-colors we see accros europe and the world in general.

Estonia is the same language family as Finnish and if Finland is Nordic so should Estonia imo. Even though they are a post-soviet country the healthcare is run like the Nordic model and not the Soviet/Russian model.

Unfortunate that Drew didn't go over any of New Zealand's proposed flags during the flag referendum. I think some of those look awesome.

The star on the Utah flag was originally supposed to be an eight-pointed star representing the Federally-recognized Indian tribes that have historically existed in the land now known as Utah. There was concern that it looked like an asterisk, and some controversy about whether it truly represented Indians respectfully and inclusively, so it was changed to a five-pointed star in a late change right before adoption.

You should watch new J.J. McCullough's video "Flag reform was a mistake". I also used to believe that a flag should be as simple as possible, but his video gave a new perspective on the topic

As an Utahn, the new flag is dope, this one has significance and meaning, the old one was just the state seal

I know people who are still sort of upset about the change in the Canadian flag as the new design deletes both the references to the British as well as the French parts of our heritage. The fact that it was heavily influenced by Pierre Elliott Trudeau (father of our current Prime Minister) doesn't help things at all.

Fun fact: The german flag today and the proposed vertical tri-color already existed as flags before in Germany as the flags of the Reuss-Gera and Reuss-Greiz principalities.

estonia is pretty much smaller version of finland. the languages are very similar and the cultures are very similar and people are ethnically similar since both formed from balto-finnic tribes. estonia also was controlled by denmark and sweden so has ties to them aswell.

I agree flags should be simple. If it has more than 3 colours, it already looks too busy to me.

the southern cross is very visible from brazil too. Big part of our culture.

Estonia has really close bonds with Finland along with ethnic and linguistic connections with Finland, who is a Nordic nation

while I do like simple flags I do agree with JJ Mccullough that modern flags are getting to focused on being correct that they are starting to look bland and uninteresting. Like many of the new ones look the exact same.
