Loft Conversion Challenge: Lifting and Placing RSJs Like a Pro

James is on a new project with Ian and Co., and this one's a massive loft conversion.

When undertaking a loft conversion with RSJs (Rolled Steel Joists), several critical factors come into play to ensure safety, stability, and structural integrity. RSJs are often used to support new loft floors and roof structures, providing the strength needed to carry heavy loads. Here’s what you need to consider:

Structural Assessment: Before you start, consult with a structural engineer. RSJs add significant weight to a building, so assessing the existing structure is essential to confirm it can support the added load.

Accurate Measurements: Precision is key when installing RSJs. Even minor measurement errors can lead to misalignment and reduced structural support. Be prepared to re-check measurements at each stage to ensure accuracy.

Proper Equipment and Team Coordination: RSJs are heavy and challenging to manoeuvre, especially in confined loft spaces. Specialized lifting tools, like genie lifts or hoists, may be necessary. A coordinated team effort ensures safe handling and reduces the risk of injury or property damage.

Clearance and Placement: Ensure sufficient clearance for RSJ positioning within the loft. Consider obstacles such as existing beams, wiring, and plumbing, which may need to be relocated. Plan placement carefully, as mistakes can be costly to rectify.

Insulation and Soundproofing: RSJs can conduct sound, potentially creating noise issues in lower rooms. Insulating around the RSJs can help minimize sound transfer and improve energy efficiency.

Compliance with Building Codes: Ensure all aspects of the RSJ installation meet local building codes. Inspections may be required to confirm that the structure complies with safety standards, and any deviation can result in costly modifications.

Addressing these considerations will ensure a safe, efficient loft conversion that maximizes space while maintaining the home’s structural integrity.

That scaffolding/tarp action is impressive. Sure beats the daily weather planning and tarp removal I'm accustomed to.

Modern building technology - level beams, square corners. Makes everything else that follows so much more easy. Sipping a 6 year old rye and watching this is so relaxing. Cheers.

Here’s the consistent thing with the Skill Builder videos...when you check and there’s 60 seconds of the film left, but you are left disappointed as you could easily sit and watch another 10 minutes!

Thanks boys, it takes a huge effort to film, edit and publish and it’s greatly appreciated! If you ever want a trip to Edinburgh to film “Skill Builder On Tour” my old house would love to welcome you all for some expert work. Keep up the great work

What I find most incredible about the whole project is that you built very serious scaffolding around the whole site to protect everything from the weather! I have never seen anything like that here in North America. I guess we are just shabby unprofessional builders. Also I got no problems with ads as you were saying you’ve got to eat!

Never seen such an elaborate scaffold for a domestic job, nice setup-ideal for the UK; even if it is summer, there will be another season along in a few hours..

Such a lovely way to work with the temporary roof and enclosure.
Time to do everything in order
Different scenario from mid winter client living on site and can't afford the cost for the temporary roof 😂😮🙈

Love to see the bit in the CDM where the scaffold beam is propped with a bit of 4x2 😆

If I'd got you lot to do my loft it might be finished by now! Great work as with the rest of the king build series but I'm particularly enjoying these ads. I'm thinking men's moisturiser and sun screen next?!!
