My grandfather fought in Okinawa at 18 years old and he barely ever spoke about his service, but when he did he made it sound like something far worse than the most gruesome depictions of war in any form of media. He was a BAR operator who landed on day one so he was on the front lines and he saw it all. His CO told him that he was gonna be put on mortar duty further back after just a few weeks of being in what they called “the meat grinder, ” and that one order quite literally saved his life. In his unit of 200+ Marines he was one of only seven to survive Okinawa and see the end of the war. He lived a good long life, met his wife while he was stationed at Pearl Harbor, they got married in Hawaii on the fifth anniversary of the attack, and they were together for 61 years until my nana died in March 2007 and he died in March 2022 at age 95 exactly 15 years later almost to the day. I love and still miss them both very much ❤️

A dark tidbit about kamikazes, they actually reduced casualties. Reason being that you had to send less planes to score a hit on an enemy ship. U.S aa and intercept capabilities were so good late war that conventional strikes were pointless due to the miss rate of attacking aircraft.
