It is a common mistake to think that the people in ancient times were, somehow, dim or incapable just because they didn't have our level of knowledge or technology. People everywhere and everywhen tend to be pretty similar, though, and there were keen minds and great leaders in all times and parts of the world. It pays not to underestimate what ancient civilizations were capable of.

More amazing is the logistics of doing this type of construction. Financing the project, drawing up architectural plans, manufacturing tools, feeding and housing the workers and training the skilled and semi-skilled labor. Gives one a sense of amazement at yet another great accomplishment of Rome.

This was a great video, exactly to the point, well researched, and correct.

the stone work shows clearly that romans bulit it, it's not so complicated to understand, all the marks in the stones are common in roman stone buildings, a very simmilar complex a little smaller is the second jewish temple of Jerusalem built also during the roman empire, with big stones, the platform of the temple of Jerusalem also have 3 massive stones but of 600 Tons not 800.

Excellent video! I am currently working on a research paper that attempts to clarify the construction sequence of the Baalbek temple complex and its pre-Roman origin. I’d just like to point out a few facts that may help reassess the case for a pre-Roman origin of the Trilithon:
+ All evidence points to Baalbek being a major sanctuary long before Roman times. It is mentioned in the epic of Gilgamesh and identified in an Ugarit inscription as the chief temple of El. Certainly, no minor town would be given the portentous name of Heliopolis (The City of the Sun), with which it was known in Hellenistic times. Furthermore, it is extremely likely that Baalbek should be identified with the Triparadeisos where the treaty of the same name was signed, establishing the division of Alexander’s Empire in 321 BCE.
+ It has been proposed that Baalbek is the temple of Elagabalus, supposedly located in Emesa, but which has never been found. Baalbek was under the patronage of the Emesene kings and its location would much better befit the temple of a “Lord of the Mountain” than a city in a plain.
+ Jean-Pierre Adam’s model for the construction of the Trilithon using capstans ignores the pre-existing Podium I. Daniel Lohmann has demonstrated that the foundations of Podium I go under those of the outer megalithic wall. It would have been all but impossible to maneuver the giant blocks as suggested by Adam around an existing podium.
+ The only possible scenario is, in my opinion, that Podium I and II (the megalithic podium) were built at the same time to support a very different kind of temple. Both predate the Roman phase of the temples.
+ The column drum in the foundations of the Trilithon is likely from an Arabic repair.

Herod was a madman but he knew how to build impressive buildings.

You are kind to what can be charitably called conspiracy theories.

To think are ancestors were so inept staggers the imagination.

Atlanteans, please, it’s clearly time traveling aliens from the fourth dimension. What strange religions the modern superstitious world makes.

If Romans were capable of transporting huge Egyptian obelisks from Luxor and Heliopolis all the way to Rome and Constantinople using special ships then they would have been capable of building Balbek and similar! I have a theory about the Atlantis myth - I believe it originated in the Phoenician and Carthaginian worlds but the literary sources got destroyed when Rome eradicated Carthage and its culture. After all they were the ones who had numerous colonies in the western Mediterranian and in Morocco outside the Pillars of Hercules and the Atlas mountains. After all "Atlantis" comes from "Atlas" and that myth. Phoenicians probably found evidence of cities destroyed by earthquakes and tsunamis in the region. Lisbon in Portugal got totally obliterated by such a one in approx 1750. Plato from which the story comes lived a substantial time in Sicily and island contested between Greeks and Phoenicians for centuries and he may have got wind of the tale there and then stated that Solon said it from an Egyptian priest. Just a little theory!

Great video, I had the misconception that baalbek had the largest the temple the romans built, but it makes sense that the largest would be in the city of Rome. Thanks for clarifying!

The essence of Hancock - style argument can be summed up as "I am too dumb to imagine how the best engineers and architects of the ancient world could have done it without modern technology, therefore they couldn't have done it. Must have been aliens/Atlanteans/magic."

THE PHOENICIANS built them. They had maritime ships, could navigate the rivers/seas, and able to trade for giant animals from different locations such as elephants. They were the middle men not given enough credit for. They set up a web colony and was the first to do so.

After investing all the effort into a stone that turned out to be too big, wht not cut it in half versus abandoning it?

I never see a comprehensive total picture of Balbeck. Your presentation is excellent though also showing the adjacent areas and total complex would be even better?

The idea that something like Atlantis existed doesnt only rest in one site, but several sites and legends that point to something interesting happening in deep antiquity. After the founding of gobekli tepe, i fail to see how an older civilization is considered a "conspiracy". (Especially when so many conspiracy theorires have been proven correct recently)

People often forget that slaves existed. Or, I guess, they don't know what that really means.

I think the funniest thing about Baalbek is that the architects just drew where they wanted stuff to be erected on top of the platform itself.

Did you by chance watch "Ancient aliens debunked"? Yes I agree with the video, it was most likely the romans who built it as the trilithon stones were later editions to the retaining wall at Baalbek where the original Canaanite platform was extended and built on and since there is no dispute that the romans built the retaining wall with the Master Course Stone in it they are the likely builders.
