I hydrolocked my 4.0 in my YJ three times. It started smoking a little bit after the third time, but it was at 197k miles by that time. I ended up selling it to a guy for $100. Take off the intake manifold, drain the water out, make sure the intake box is dry, pull the plugs and shoot the water out, and run it.

that is why i bought a snorkel for my xj, almost had it happen to me once and the moment i got home i went on amazon looking for snorkels

That sucks but you should put a snorkel on it so you can into deeper mud than that also you should put on a winch so you can go out by your self and if you get stuck in icy weather you can easily get out of problems.

Pop a fuel line to see if ya got water in the tank happens often enough. A clear cup helps

Same thing happened to me and I swapped the motor out with another 4.0 and it’s pretty simple to do with a cherry picker so good luck and hope to see you you out in the xj real soon

I have an 01 with the same exact bumper and stinger. The 4.0S are tough, a little TLC and I think you’ll be back on the road. Could recommend a cowl intake, which I have and love, or a snorkel to raise your intake point so that doesn’t happen again. Best of luck, you’re an inspiration

You guys should keep trying I’ve had one we completely submerged in water locked it up put atf in it got the water out broke the engine free it was running rough at first it cleared up and we drove it 4 hours back home it was definitely a surprise for all of us those xj are bulletproof

Before you start it again, you have to take your intake boot off because theres still water in your intake. You also have to replace your air filter.

Fun, i bought a 78 bronco that was a mud truck and that 460 was stuck as hell. Later found out it was hydrolocked. I think theu submerged the truck to the roof

For starters put a damn snorkel on that thing wouldn’t have touched any water u til I had one. Second gonna have to get you an engine. I bought my transmission for my 1998 XJ from a place called Little Rays used cars and car parts inc located in Kentucky but they do deliver. Put my transmission in at 209000mi now have over 220000mi. Only paid $350 for it when I got it I replaced the filter and obviously had to add new fluid. Runs like a dream. Love my XJ I daily drive it.

Hell yeah bro i did the exact same thing the snorkel is a must everyone says there bs. Mine shot number 1 rod threw the block i kept it as a nice trophy 🏆 replace engine upgrade repeat
