If you’re like me and didn’t come to the comments to check for issues with the video before removing the damper string, here’s what I did to replace it. Take a long piece of thin twine and thread it into the loop of the damper string (it is easiest to do this while the glove box is lowered in the position that lets you access the cabin filter). That way, you can keep hold of it. Then - and this is the key part that I didn’t realize - you can use your twine to PULL on the damper string to extend it and give yourself enough slack to get it around the hook. It takes a good bit of strength to pull and extend the string, but it WILL extend and give you the slack you need. It’s still a pain in the ass but it is doable.

Adding to the pile of “don’t remove the string” comments. It broke trying get it back on. Just skip removing the string, it’s not necessary.

Do not remove the damper cord! It took 3 minutes to change the filter and close to an hour trying multiple tools to reconnect the damper cord. I had to make a large loop through the cord to pull it and a large flat screwdriver to work it on to the peg. There is no reason to remove it!

Use a pair of pliers to hold the string in place and slip it back on. Make sure you don’t use the “cutter” part of the pliers if using needle nose.

If anyone is stuck with re-attaching the white string, I did this: disengage both top tabs of the glove box. fishing line (or something similar) looped thru the string. Double knot fishing line. Put screw driver thru fishing line loop you just made. Pull to get close to black plastic holding tab. Use finger to catch the tab with white string and push it in. Took me 2-3 mins.
