The U.S. was late in getting testing started because of a failure of CDC test efforts, according to Dr. Joshua Sharfstein, vice dean at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and former FDA deputy commissioner. The initial failure, paired with shortages with the different components that make up the tests are all reasons why there have been shortages for COVID-19 tests in the U.S. Sharfstein spoke with PBS NewsHour's William Brangham on May 13 about testing for coronavirus in the United States.
