In both Libya and Iraq, the fall of secular governments resulted in prolonged instability, conflict, and the rise of extremist factions.

If Syria follows a similar trajectory, it is likely that once the current regime is removed, rebels and Western powers will engage in a protracted struggle over who will take control. This internal and external competition could further fracture the country, exacerbating violence and making any hopes for stability or rebuilding even more remote.
