Which NUTS Top the Charts with Healthy FATS?- Thomas DeLauer

Today we’re covering the best AND worst nuts that you can purchase at the grocery store. This will be a partial haul in which we go to the store to see what’s available, and then I explain the benefits, or the negative effects, of all the nuts back at the studio! Enjoy, and I’ll see you in the comments!

Conclusion: nuts are almost worthless if being consumed for omega 3 acids. A 4 oz can of sardines in water has about 200 calories and 2, 000 mg of omega 3s (varies, depending upon source, brand, etc.). Cost: about $2. Macadamia nuts (current market price): $20/lb. Pili nuts : $30+/lb. At those prices, you're not getting a significant amount of omega 3s on a daily basis from those nuts, regardless of their profile.

Enjoy your nuts if you like them; they have plenty of other health benefits and they're still better than processed snack foods, but forget about eating them for the omega 3s.

As for nut flour, since it was mentioned; nut flour is made by mechanically expelling the oil, as in removing the fatty acids, leaving the carbs, fiber and protein, leaving only traces of fats. Eating nut flour "for the omega 3s" completely misses the plot.

I like the video but what really gave me a smile was that you were cognizant of and caring for others in the store and decided to take the product home to talk about it since the store was busy. Thanks for caring.

I don't really get focusing mostly on the omega3/omega6 ratio when talking about nuts. Yes, it's important and if you have a good diet, you should balance them a bit with good omega-3s. But let's be honest, today's society is overconsuming omega 6s because of vegetable oils, not because everybody's munching on nuts. :)
And nuts are so much more than just the fats! The minerals, the vitamins, the antioxidants. They're really a superfood in some contexts and no one should ignore that when making healthy food choices. The video mentions it a few times, but there are so many other things - for example hazelnuts are actually a great source of oleic acid, almonds also pack a good amount of nutrients and good protein (they're not just about omega6s!). :)

"Limit yourself to 1, maybe 3, you know 10-12..."
Yup, that's what tends to happen when we open a bag of nuts 😂

Pistachio’s 3:6 ratio is .312g of Om3 to 16.23g of Om6 per 1 CUP serving, meaning the ratio sums up to .0192 (compared to Mac Nuts .1512) Total of 54.7g fat content per 1 CUP serving.

The best ist hemp seed, not a nut,
it has a 3:1 Omega -3 to Omega-6 ratio.
And I really like the taste.

You're not kidding about cashews. I got a individual sleeve of them. Blew over half my daily carbs on a snack. 🙁. Learning alot about keto from your channel.

I'll eat an ounce of raw walnuts and pecans with fish, to balance the Omega-3s and 6s. Macadamia nuts I'll eat 2 ounces with meat/chicken. But I pre-soak (then dehydrate) them all to reduce the phytic acid. Pili nuts are great. If I was Jeff Bezos, I'd eat them everyday.

Curious why you didn't go over pistachio or sunflower seeds? Love the videos. Thanks for always educating us.

Conclusion:

Munch on macadamia, pili nuts
Have pecans as toppings in moderation
Have hazelnut flour instead of almond flour

1:4 ratio in walnuts isn’t bad at all, 1:10 ratio is baseline for good health. Instead I would be more concerned about oxidization from roasting especially if it contains omega3s. It’s nice learning things from influencers, but they can be wrong when they learn on the fly.

Just imagine if Thomas didn't decide to change his life by reducing his 'fat' bod, none of this info would have existed, and thousands of people would still be suffering with their health due to bad food/diet habits.
Couldn't thank enough Tom, mean it!

I stick with macadamia nuts. When I first started Keto, I bought pili nuts. Mealy doesn't begin to describe the texture. Even though they were expensive, I just couldn't eat them. I ended up making a butter out of them, which was a little more tolerable, but still not great. It's a hard pass for me.

Macadamia is THE BEST but it always costs an arm and a leg. I've stopped consuming all forms of nuts because I just can't stop snacking on them

Old video, but I'd like to note that the Omega 3:6 ratio is specifically important when talking about the enzyme that converts ALA to DHA and EPA. It is irrelevant when comparing it to actual DHA and EPA from fish or algae, which is already converted and does not need to be elongated. So when trying to maintain a healthy ratio of Omega 3s to Omega 6s, specifically focus on the ALA Omega 3s (flax seed, hemp, etc) to your Omega 6 intake (generally accepted ratio is 4:1, but some conditions may advocate for a lower ratio of 2-3:1 if you need additional anti-inflammatory effect.)
