The Downfall of Scotland's Most Hated Criminal

When human remains were found in a shallow grave in remote woodland on the 17th of December 2015, near West Calder, Glasgow - it was clear that the person involved had come to a gruesome end.

At first, Police could not be sure that what was found was human. The remains were not intact, and only part of the spine and skull remained.
The find was particularly significant - because the remains were eventually identified as none other than Martin Hamilton.

Police believed that a man who was one of Scotland’s most wanted criminals could have been murdered as long ago as the previous April, shortly after he was last seen alive and months before his body was discovered.

So how did this once infamous gangster come to such a grizzly end? And what had gone on in the previous 20 years to culminate in this moment?
Known as “The Blackhill Butcher”, Hamilton was a feared gangland enforcer often cited as Scotland’s most hated criminal.

An old university friend of mine worked at a high level for the Procurator Fiscal's Office in Scotland. He was horrified when Hamilton only got a minimum sentence of 9 years for his life sentence. He thought Kingarth was far too lenient.
He had retired and relocated to England by the time Hamilton was released, but he was concerned that Hamilton might seek retribution on those who'd brought him to justice.
He drank a wee dram when he found out that he had been murdered. Certainly, no-one shed any tears for him.

I had the dubious pleasure of taking Martin Hamilton out on his home Leaves to Glasgow from Castle Huntly open prison. For months he literally sat beside me in the car, as I took him out, then brought him back a few days later. I brought him back on the Saturday before his parole when he was released, a few days later. He told me that he would not get his parole, so it was a surprise to hear that he got it. He was actually released from Castle Huntly, not Shotts as you stated, but Shotts was the prison he was serving his time in before he went to Castle Huntly. For quite some time I had no idea who was sitting next to me.

Had a chap at the door at one in the morning after we had came home from the Albion social club in Yoker. I had a solid iron bar at the end of the hall. It was hollow in the middle! I looked round the corner of the hall and see a pair of eyes looking through the letter box. I charge the letter box with the bar, which looks like a Shotter. Shout comes up "Am here to check your brother is ok" Heard he had problems with the McCluskies" One of the McCluskies stayed at the bottom of our flat and we did have history" So open the door and hide the bar. Hammy and a taxi driver comes in (didnt know hammy) He takes off his crombie. I clock the Shotter. He starts off "I need to get a hold of your bro" My wife says "Fuck off, dont know who you are" It was her brother he wanted! He sits down and says "Am the local hard man" Am drunk and says "are you made of cement" he then says "I was all over the news for a bank job in Anniesland" My wife says "It couldnt have been that interesting" As I was drunk the penny is starting to drop! Hammy pulls his phone out and askes my wife to phone her bro, but to go out onto the veranda to get a better reception. She does go out on the veranda and phone her bro (while I still rip the pish out him) She comes back in from the veranda chalk white! She then gives me a heads up. That her bro has told her to get the fuck off the veranda as he will toss her off it. Her bro says he will meet him. To this day dont know the ins ands out of that convo. But I do know he thought we had a Shotter and that saved us. He is now where he should be!

A neighbour of Hammy’s, who would have beat up Hammy easily, told me he came back from work to find a police helicopter, numerous police officers and sharpshooters on his roof all just to give Hammy a warrant. That day another neighbour was playing cards and smoking dope with his pals when they heard someone on the roof. The neighbour went out into the close to see police officers who told him get back to your smoking son.

I lived within a few hundred meters of where the remains were found and had detectives (and some others who claimed to be) at my door asking if I'd seen anything. I'd only moved to the house in October of '15 though. Also, West Calder is not a part of (or even particularly near) Glasgow.

West Calder isn't in Glasgow or even anywhere near. It's in West Lothian, the other side of Scotland, on the Firth of Forth and much nearer to Edinburgh.

I know a good few people who had been locked up with Hamilton and we all called him Hammy. I knew the lad he raped in jail aswell. Unfortunately he died 3-4 year back through drugs I think it was? Wasn’t right after sharing a cell with Hammy. You can imagine why.

I can't say much here, but spoke to a prison officer and he said he used to send young difficult prisoners into his cell so he could rape them. It was revenge for their behaviour to the prison staff. I hated that guy when he told me that, he did though so much worse, scum
